For Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Motor (Part Number: OEM18020316)

Brian for Model Number GSH22VGRE WW

My GE side by side has an issue with the auger motor and or dispenser board. I pulled the auger unit out and checked continuity on the 2 electrical prongs/pins to the auger motor. I checked ohm readings through all the wires as well that are associated with the solenoid/auger wiring. These readings all seemed good. I cleaned up all the contacts/electrical connections to be sure there wasn't any oxidation/corrosion present on any of the contacts. I re-installed the unit and re-connected all wire harnesses and checked function again. When the freezer door switch is closed and an attempt to dispense ice with the lever on the front of the door, there are 2 different things happening depending on whether you want crushed ice or cubed ice. If crushed ice is selected and the lever is depressed, the solenoid just hums without movement and also there is no movement with the auger motor either. If your select cubed ice and depress the lever on the door, the solenoid activates and brings upward tension on the metal rod attached to the ice bin and you can still hear a humming, but there is no auger motor movement also. I am not sure where the problem is based on these observations? Are there more tests I can perform to determine the root cause of the lack of movement with the augur motor?

Hello Brian, This is a common occurrence with GE models. You can try turning the motor by hand. If the auger drive turns without turning the motor, the motor shaft has stripped and the auger motor will require replacement. You should use a hair dryer on the medium setting for about 15 minutes concentrating on the auger motor. What seems to happen in most cases is that the motor actually freezes up. You see, when room air enters the unit, the humidity in that air tends to condense on colder surfaces first. This would include the surfaces of the motor that are unpainted metal. If this restores operation you should do two things. First, shine a strong flashlight into the ice door area from the outside of the door while looking into the ice chute on the inside of the door. If you see light, the ice door is not seating properly. If there is no visible light, use a dollar bill around the door seal to make sure there is resistance on the bill all the way around, telling you that there is a good seal. Lastly, set the freezer to one setting warmer to attempt prevention of the problems' recurrance.

Elaine, You will want to pull the drip tray out and behind the drip tray there will be a 2 screws that you will need to remove. Once you remove the screws take the dispenser housing off and you will have access to the dispenser assembly to access the motor.

Hello Glen, You could order a white one WP2252080W or a biscuit one 2252080T and remove the needed parts from the rear and install on the existing cover. I would first test for voltage at the door connector at the door hinge.

Bill, You can test to make sure that when you push the lever there is voltage to the brown/white wire and the Red/white wire. If there is no power then the issue will be a faulty control board most likely. If there is power then the motor is the issue.

Hunter M for Model Number 106.56532400

The ice and water dispenser stopped working on our Kennmore Fridge (106.56532400). It looks like somebody tried crushed ice and it locked up completely. I've cleared the clog, emptied the ice bucket (on the door) and the ice maker is working but we can't get ice or water out of the door. Does the ice dispenser motor control both the ice and the water? Is there a reset button or something? PS: We just replaced the ice maker and valves, so I know that's not the issue.

1 Answer

Hunter. This dispenser assembly has a lock on it. You will want to make sure that the dispenser is not locked. The motor would have nothing to do with both not working. The most likely cause for this would be that it is locked.
