The Diverter Motor is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers controls the diverter valve, which directs water flow to various spray arms throughout the dishwasher during a wash cycle. By accurately adjusting the flow of water, the diverter motor ensures that dishes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed by optimizing coverage and water intensity according to the cycle selected.

Causes of a bad Diverter Motor can include electrical failures, mechanical wear over time, or damage from water infiltration.

Symptoms of a bad Diverter Motor include:

  • Dishes not being cleaned properly due to insufficient water reaching all areas.
  • Unusual noises coming from the dishwasher, which may indicate a struggling or stuck diverter motor.
  • Error codes displayed on the dishwasher that are related to water distribution functions.
  • Leakage from the dishwasher base

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Jim, thanks for asking. The manufacturer only makes the diverter motor seal/grommet available for purchase with the sump assembly. W10805015

Ed, thanks for the question. Unfortunately, if the gasket did not solve the issue, you will likely need to replace the entire sump assembly. For assistance with the sump part number, we will need the complete machine model number.

Hello Gordon, thank you for contacting APP, If the seal is leaking where the sump meets the tub the Sump WPW10455268 will need to be replaced, there is also a seal between the Wash Motor and Diverter that can leak, this seal only comes as part of the Sump and Motor Assembly WPW10671941.

how do you know if the problem is a inlet valve or a diverter motor? My dishwasher doesnt sound like its getting any water. I start it and sometimes it sounds like its getting water and other times it isnt. I have heard that buzzing noise and grinding noise lately when i started having this problem.Where does a guy start? pump, diverter motor, inletvalve, control panel. When i started having this problem it stopped working on normal wash so i started using heavy wash cycle and it worked . now it doesnt work on any cycle. Any advice would be appreciated. It does drain so Im thinking its not the pump/drain motor. Bought this unit new 7 years ago

Rick, You will want to check to see if there is water in the unit when the pump starts. If there is no water then test to see if there is 120 vac to the water valve when filling and if there is then the valve will be the issue.

David, unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list the specific grease used with the diverter motor W10537869 nor do they show a food-grade grease available separately.

Food residue being left on dishes, which got me to trouble-shooting. Lower spray arm does not appear to be spinning/supplied with water. (Position noted; run for ten minutes; position unchanged.) If I am understanding the diagrams correctly, the diffuser/diverter controls whether water is supplied to lower spray arm or middle/upper spray arm, depending on position of the diffuser/diverter disc and its opening. In other words, the diffuser/diverter disc allows water to flow out of one port of the cover or the other, but water does not flow out of both -- and hence to the lower and middle/upper spray arms -- simultaneously. IS THIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE DRAWINGS CORRECT? Assuming this understanding is correct, how frequently is the diverter motor supposed to turn the diffuser/diverter from one position to the other? Every time I open the dishwasher while testing things and find the lower spray arm has not changed position, I pull the spray arm off and reach down into the port in the cover and find that port still blocked by the diffuser/diverter disc. This would be consistent with lower spray arm not getting any water, which would help explain dishes not getting cleaned. BASED ON THIS, I BELIEVE THE DIVERTER MOTOR IS SHOT. DO YOU AGREE?

Hello MG, if the dishwasher is filling with water but the circulation motor is not running then it needs to be replaced W10894668, if it is running then the cause may be the diverter motor W10537869.

My original problem what that dishes were not getting washed. Noticed that some water was getting added at the beginning of the cycle but nothing happened from that point. Replaced the inlet valve and that didn't fix my problem. I removed all the parts to expose the diverter motor to see if it is moving while the washer cycles. It does, but still do not get water pumped through that would drive the washer heads. Could this still be the diverter or am I missing something in my troubleshooting?

1 Answer

Jeff, If there is no water circulating, this would most likely be caused by a circulation pump.

Glenn, If the unit will not drain then you will want to test to see if there is 120 Vac getting to the drain pump. If there is, make sure that there are no clogs in the drain system and if not then replace the drain pump. If there is not then the issue will be with the main control board or wiring.

If the diverter motor is leaking the only solution is to replace it and the seal (which only comes as part of the sump assembly) if needed.
