The Shock Absorber is an OEM part designed for Whirlpool washing machines. This part helps to dampen the motion of the tub during the spin cycle, reducing vibrations and noise. By absorbing the energy produced during operation, the shock absorber contributes to the stability and longevity of the machine. A well-functioning set of shock absorbers is essential for maintaining the washer's performance and preventing damage to other components.

Causes of a bad shock absorber can include wear and tear from regular use, excessive load sizes or unbalanced loads, and structural damage from moving or improper handling.

Symptoms of a bad Shock Absorber include:

  • Increased vibration and noise during the spin cycle
  • The washer moving or "walking" across the floor
  • Unusual wear on other components due to excessive movement

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

I forgot to mention on my previous question with the loud noise on spin cycle until rpm is reached that the tub is on a soild tile cement floor. I also checked the inner tub for play, when I hold the outer tub stationary the inner tub spins freely in either direction with no side to side or up and down movement, it does sound like some change is rattling around at lower rpm till it stops pretty sure it is the baffles since you canmove them a bit. When I spin it by hand really fast it is nice and smooth with no odd noises.

1 Answer

Greg, You will want to check the shock absorbers to make sure that they are good. If the bearings are bad the unit will not make noise during spinning the tub by hand. It is still possible that the bearings could be bad.

Hello Nicole! Unfortunately, we do not have the specs available to verify the difference in the two shocks. According to your model you'll need to order W10822553 for your unit to function properly. Yes, all four are the same within your model. Thanks.

Paul, Aside from checking the levelness of the unit, you will also want to check the shocks and check the tub to make sure that there is no up or down motion of the inner tub to the outer tub. If there is then it could be a bearing or spinner support issue.

Hello Jon, You need to check the drain pump area for any debris that could prevent the unit from fully draining. If it is clear and the drain pump impeller does not appear to be damaged, you will need to run a diagnostic test to see what, (if any) fault codes are stored in the control. This is explained on the tech sheet behind the kick panel.

Jon for Model Number WFW9050XW00

My washer has quit spinning at the high speed level. It spins at all the other speeds just not the high speed. It appears to keep trying to balance the load which is why it wont spin at high speed. It will spin at High speed with no clothes in the washer(Empty). I noticed it appears the shocks are allowing the baskets to flop around to much therefore never giving a balanced load feel. Does this sound right. I was going to replace the shocks mine only has 3 not sure what the part number is.

1 Answer

Jon, Based on the information it does sound like the shock absorber would be the issue. The part number for the shock absorber is W10822553 and wound need a quantity of 3.

Bill, The best way to tell if the shocks are bad is by pushing down on the tub and seeing if it springs back up. If not then the shocks are most likely bad.

Kenny for Model Number wfw9150ww00

Hello, I have the whirlpool model WFW9150WW00, and its bouncing around vibrating very badly. I noticed the rear shock seems to be to soft. Upon reading a few questions on here I noticed one person said they had 3 shock on their machine. I noticed mine only has 3 as well, two shocks on left side and one central mount shock on the right side. There seems to be provisions to move that shock on the right side to the front and rear of the frame and drum. Would adding a fourth shock and relocating the original central shock be beneficial, and what possibility does it have to void warranty contract? Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Kenny. You can not add an extra shock. Make sure all parts on the unit are good and tight. Including the motor and all the weights. Also, check for bad tub bearings causing the issues.
