The Shock Absorber is an OEM part designed for Whirlpool washing machines. This part helps to dampen the motion of the tub during the spin cycle, reducing vibrations and noise. By absorbing the energy produced during operation, the shock absorber contributes to the stability and longevity of the machine. A well-functioning set of shock absorbers is essential for maintaining the washer's performance and preventing damage to other components.

Causes of a bad shock absorber can include wear and tear from regular use, excessive load sizes or unbalanced loads, and structural damage from moving or improper handling.

Symptoms of a bad Shock Absorber include:

  • Increased vibration and noise during the spin cycle
  • The washer moving or "walking" across the floor
  • Unusual wear on other components due to excessive movement

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Shock Absorber (Part Number: OEM17955636)

1 Answer

Andy, The shock absorber would not cause the led/start to not work. You will want to check the connections but would most likely be the interface or the control board.

Charles for Model Number wfw9150ww01

My washer started started making a loud banging noise when it was spinning fast. After taking a look inside I see that the drum is able to move around quit a bit in the washer, the bearings are fine though. The noise I was hearing is the drum slamming into the front of the washer. I noticed that the model only comes with 3 shocks, which is most likely the reason for failure. The side that has a single shock seems to be weak. Is it fine to install two shocks on this side so this doesn't happen again in another two years?

1 Answer

Charles, Your unit should have 4 shocks on it. There would be 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. If yours only has 3 then you would want to make sure that the 4th is put on.

Shane, When replacing the shocks you should always replace all the shocks at the same time. Once you replace the rear shocks, also check to make sure that the unit is level, the rubber on the feet are not damaged, that the legs are locked into place and check to make sure that the unit is on a good solid floor.

Ben, You will want to check for movement of the inner tub up and down. If there is movement up and down then either the spinner support weld has broken or bad tub bearings. To check the shocks you would push down on the tub and it should spring back up. If not then the shocks are worn.

Alex for Model Number Whirlpool duet front load washer

Hello. My front load whirlpool washer recently started shaking violently during the spin cycle. Inspection of the shocks displays signs that they're bad, they all have grease accumulated at the end of the shock plunger. After reading some of the questions asked in the past I stumbled across a few that suggested the tub be checked, if it spins free but moves the tub might need replacing. Can you please explain what type of movement you are referring to. My wash tub spins freely. However, it does have a bit of movement towards the shocks, not much but it isn't completely stationary. How much rotational play should there be if any . Thanks, Alex.

1 Answer

Hello Alex. The inner basket is the part needing to the checked here. It should rotate fine, but nut have any movement upward, downward, or side to side. It should be snug in the bearing assembly. The outer tub assembly will move around and up and down and side to side. This is normal for it.

Michael, There is some "play" in the shock absorbers W10822553, but your's are on the "Outside" allowances and will need to ber repalced. All four shocks should be replaced at the same time, and also check the suspension springs W10822553 and cabinet attachment points should be checked as well(make sure there's no flexxing in the cabinet flange, where the springs and spacers attach.

Randy, There are four(4) shock absorbers W10822553,and two(2) suspension springs W10135004 that suspend and support the tub assemblies. You'll need to remove the lower front access panel, the rear access panel, and the top panel to access and replace the assemblies. If you repalce the shocks and springs one at a time, you'll find it a lot easier to work with.
