The Shock Absorber is an OEM part designed for Whirlpool washing machines. This part helps to dampen the motion of the tub during the spin cycle, reducing vibrations and noise. By absorbing the energy produced during operation, the shock absorber contributes to the stability and longevity of the machine. A well-functioning set of shock absorbers is essential for maintaining the washer's performance and preventing damage to other components.

Causes of a bad shock absorber can include wear and tear from regular use, excessive load sizes or unbalanced loads, and structural damage from moving or improper handling.

Symptoms of a bad Shock Absorber include:

  • Increased vibration and noise during the spin cycle
  • The washer moving or "walking" across the floor
  • Unusual wear on other components due to excessive movement

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Kevin, You will want to make sure that the solution in the balance ring has not leaked out and if it has the balance ring would need to be replaced. If this checks ok then it could be the shock absorbers that could be the issue.

We have had this washer for about 5 years now and it just started acting up. Everything works fine until it has to spin and it will never pick up any speed. It will stay in 1 minute remaining for over an hour and just keep trying but never completes the spin. Eventually sometimes it will give error code E2 F7 but I'm not sure if that's because its over heating from trying or the cause of the issue. I thought maybe the shocks were shot because it seems to move around more before it trys to skin and maybe the motor is picking up on that but they don't seem too bad. Help!

Jeff, The F7E2 error would indicate a faulty MCU failure and would need a new motor control board. This part that would be needed is the drive motor WPW10315848.

Hello Hiram. You only use 3 shocks on this model. When the unit is very noisy in spin cycle, you will need to replace the bearings in the unit. Thank you.

R. Bradley, This would be considered normal for the shocks. The weight of the tub will make up for the difference in the resistance of the shock.

Washer sometimes bangs loudly at beginning of spin until load is balanced. No play at all between inner and outer basket and it spins freely and silently by hand. I also removed the back and pulley and inspected the bearings from the rear. They seem fine. So, I assumed it was shocks. Visually, all shocks look good. I removed one of them and compared it to a new one and there seems to be very little difference in resistance. So now I'm wondering if the shocks are the problem. Could the banging just be normal when a load is unbalanced? Thank you

1 Answer

Lou, It sounds like the shocks are OK. a better way to check them is to remove the top panel and push down on the tub assembly as far as possible. When you release the tub, it should spring back up to it's original position with little to no excess movement or bounce. Is the washer mounted on a pedestal ? if so check to make sure it is properly installed, level and no flexing in the pedestal walls. Yes, the tub can and will make a banging noise and be off balanced, when the spin cycle first starts. especially with large, mixed loads, If the load doesn't even out, then the control will take over and redistribute the load if the tub cant reach the medium or high spin speed.

Hello Chris. It is not likely the shocks on the unit. If they are bad, they will be cracked or busted. You need to look for bad bearings in the unit. The bearings are part of the outer tub 280232 and it is discontinued. Also check for a broke spider WPW10040480.

Michael for Model Number MHWE201YW00

Hello Symptoms: when the washer spins at high speeds (to get rid of the water I am assuming) it makes a really loud banging and vibrates. (Not the jet liner sound, lol) I thought it was the shocks.. I visually inspected them and see no noticeable grease on them, and when I push down on the tub it does spring back up. It has three (3) shocks (2L, 1R) and the ends of the shocks are all attacked and seem as they should be. I did an inspection on the inner and outer tub. The inner tub seems to spin freely in the outer tub and it doesn't really have any play when I try to move it up and down. (Maybe 1/32 or 1/64" movement at most) the to itself moves down and springs back up with the assistance of the shocks. 1: Are there definitive signs to a bad shock? 2: how can I inspect the springs inside the unit to see if they are bad? 3: Should my unit have 3 or 4 shocks? I can send a video (15 seconds on my iPad) if that would be helpful for you to help me some. Thanks in advance for anything you can help with.

The manufacturer does recommend all four shocks be replaced at the same time. However, in most cases replacing the two front or the two rear shocks is usually sufficient to maintain the proper operation and balance of the tubs.
