The Shock Absorber is an OEM part designed for Whirlpool washing machines. This part helps to dampen the motion of the tub during the spin cycle, reducing vibrations and noise. By absorbing the energy produced during operation, the shock absorber contributes to the stability and longevity of the machine. A well-functioning set of shock absorbers is essential for maintaining the washer's performance and preventing damage to other components.

Causes of a bad shock absorber can include wear and tear from regular use, excessive load sizes or unbalanced loads, and structural damage from moving or improper handling.

Symptoms of a bad Shock Absorber include:

  • Increased vibration and noise during the spin cycle
  • The washer moving or "walking" across the floor
  • Unusual wear on other components due to excessive movement

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Shock Absorber (Part Number: OEM17955636)

1 Answer

Dan, We are showing that all the of the shocks should be the same and unless someone has changed the shocks at some point in time the right front shock should also be insert twist type.

ATCS Taught, the manufacturer will use 3 or 4 shocks depending on the location of the drain pump and how the manufacturer's engineers have designed the unit for efficiency and performance.

Vinnie, as this washer is a front load, the shock absorbers are going to have little resistance as they are used to absorb vibrations rather than center the tub. The washer would need to be checked to ensure that it is level. If it is properly level, the next step would be to wiggle the spin basket inside the tub. If the spin basket has play to be able to wiggle around inside of the tub, the spider shaft (part of the spin basket WPW10269756 which has been discontinued by the manufacturer) and rear tub W10772618 bearings would need to be inspected for failure. The drive belt WPW10388414 would also need to be inspected for signs of slipping and the drive pulley WP8182650 inspected to see if it is loose.

Steve, The shock absorber actually mounts to the outer tub in the top and it is a molded piece not available separately. Or if you are speaking about a piece of the shock itself it only comes as a unit.

Gary, this error code is going to indicate that there is a failed relay or a communication issue between the main control and the EEPROM on the main control. As this started occurring after excessive shaking, the wiring harness will need to be inspected for any loose connections or broken wires. At that point, if the wires check good, then the most likely issue is the main control WPW10525369.

Andrew for Model Number MHWE300VW00

A leak in in the drain hose of my washer is releasing a slow trickle of water which is finding its way down one of the shock absorbers on its way to the floor. The other three shocks are coated in grease but the slow trickle of soapy water has entirely washed the grease away on the fourth. I started out searching for information on what type of grease to use to re-lubricate the shock, but other comments have led me to believe that there should be no visible grease and that I need to replace all four shocks because the grease I see is indicative of a leak in the shock, not external lubrication. Can you help me get to the truth?

1 Answer

Andrew, there should not be grease coming from the shock absorber. While it is possible to have a light coating if the tub is loaded, there should not be a large accumulation of grease on the absorbers past the natural resting position.

Al for Model Number MFW9700SQ1

I am trying to reduce the vibration of Maytag washer when coming into/out of spinning cycle. I checked one of the shock absorbers disconnected, as well as rocking the whole tub and they seem to move a bit to easy for what I would think for the tub movement they meant to suppress. Are the new shocks supposed to be as hard to move as the guy shows in this youtube video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ9oVYi0UXw Is there any way to replace the seals or whatever inside them without replacing them whole? Thank you

1 Answer

Al, The shocks should be tight and if they are coming apart easily then it would be recommended to replace them. You cannot get the seals in the shocks.
