This dual water valve is an OEM Replacement Part intended for use with Whirlpool refrigerators that feature both a water dispenser and an ice maker. The purpose of this refrigerator water inlet valve is to supply the necessary water to both the ice maker and the water dispenser in a controlled manner. While its appearance may vary from the original part, it maintains identical functionality and is authorized by the manufacturer as a direct replacement.

Causes of a bad valve can include mineral buildup from hard water, wear and tear over time, or electrical issues. A malfunctioning valve can lead to problems with water flow, affecting both the ice maker and water dispenser.

Symptoms of a bad inlet valve may include:

  • Insufficient ice production or no ice at all
  • Low water pressure or slow water flow from the dispenser
  • Water leakage from the valve area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dual Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18018171)

1 Answer

Hello Tom, This is most likely an issue with water pressure since low water pressure and a bad water inlet valve are the only two things that will freeze the water line.

Tom, It can take upwards of 24 hours or so in order for the water tank to thaw out if it is frozen. This issue could also be a bad water filter head or water filter that could cause this issue to occur.

Hello Tim. If the water valve is slowly leaking and allowing water to over flow and form a ice build up in the bucket, you will need to replace the valve on the unit. You can remove the hose from the valve to see if it is leaking or not.

Lora, You will want to check the fill tube in the freezer compartment to make sure that it is not frozen up. If frozen then the issue is most likely that the water valve was seeping allow water to trickle in in which case you already resolved. If not frozen then the icemaker would most likely be the cause for failure.

The tube connector from the water inlet valve (W10179146) to the ice maker cracked causing a serious leak under our fridge. The problem is the tube connector, not the valve itself. When I talk to Sears Repair, they say I can just replace the 1/4 in. tubing. But the tube connector reduces the 1/4 in. tubing down to a smaller (right angle) tubing to insert into the compression fitting on the valve itself. The water inlet valve W10179146 will not accept 1/4 in. tubing. Do I need to find the reducing right angle tube to fix the leak? Or do I need to replace the whole valve that will accept larger 1/4 in. tubing?

1 Answer

A.W. Palmer, The water valve WPW10179146 does not require a special fitting to accept the 1/4" tubing. One side of the valve will accept the 5/16" line from the water tank and the other side will accept the 1/4" tubing from the icemaker.

When and if I order a dual water inlet valve kit WP2188542 for my side by side refrigerator will it have a line for a filter which mine does not have, or will it just have the hook ups for only the ice maker and water levers at the door? If it does have a hookup for a filter will there be some way to plug it and not use it?

1 Answer

Hello Daniel, Remove the front cover of the icemaker and check the two pins in the center of the geared wheel. If the pins are touching each other or one is missing, the icemaker module W10190935 will need to be replaced. Since this price is kind of inflated, you may want to replace the complete icemaker assembly WPW10190965.
