This dual water valve is an OEM Replacement Part intended for use with Whirlpool refrigerators that feature both a water dispenser and an ice maker. The purpose of this refrigerator water inlet valve is to supply the necessary water to both the ice maker and the water dispenser in a controlled manner. While its appearance may vary from the original part, it maintains identical functionality and is authorized by the manufacturer as a direct replacement.

Causes of a bad valve can include mineral buildup from hard water, wear and tear over time, or electrical issues. A malfunctioning valve can lead to problems with water flow, affecting both the ice maker and water dispenser.

Symptoms of a bad inlet valve may include:

  • Insufficient ice production or no ice at all
  • Low water pressure or slow water flow from the dispenser
  • Water leakage from the valve area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Dual Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18018171)

Jon for Model Number Kenmore side by side

I am replacing the dual valve water valve. For the wiring plugs that goes onto the poles on the valves, I know they are different sizes and one goes on the left and the other on the right. Does it matter which way the wiring connects once you determine which valve gets which plug? The reason I ask is that the diagrams included with the new valve show the wiring plugs flipped over or twisted snd whe I removed my original valves the wiring was not. Thanks for your help

Hello Jon, As long as the connectors are on the correct solenoids, it does not matter if they are flipped or not. The solenoids are not polorized.

Hello John, Only two things can cause this: A bad water valve and a pinhole allowing air into the water dispense system. In the case of the pinhole, this is normally accompanied by the complaint of a water leak. Otherwise the water valve WP2188542 normally corrects the issue.

Roger, If the icemaker water valve is leaking but the dispenser valve is not then the valve would need to be replaced. Yes low water pressure would cause either of them to stick open and not just one.

Hello Khan, You should remove the water line at the bottom of the door and put it in a shallow pan and see if water will dispense into it, with the freezer door switch closed. If not, you can remove the output line from the water valve and hold the water valve over a pan and have someone try the dispense. If it will now dispense from the valve, the water tank in the bottom of the fresh food compartment is frozen. Pointing a hair dryer at it for about 15 minutes will thaw it out. The fresh food setting should be set one number COLDER and the freezer setting to one number warmer to prevent it from freezing again. If water still didn't come out of the4 water valve, verify voltage is getting to the valve. If it is, replace the valve WP2188542. If not, you need to go to the dispense area in the front of the freezer door and check the dispense bracket WP2180226 for broken micro switch mounting pins.

John for Model Number ED22TQXFW00

I had a live chat with Angela earlier and she could not answer my scenarios. I can hear the solenoid engage when someone else activates the water dispenser. I replaced the ice door in my Whirlpool today and turned the water back on but no flow. The ice dispenser turns when I use that lever, but no water filling the automatic ice maker and no water for the water dispenser. The line is not frozen since the refrigerator has been off for over a month. Before I order the replacement water valve I would like to make sure that is the problem. Should I be able to hear a properly working solenoid when the switch on the water dispenser is engaged? Thank you.

Hello John, First of all you need to know that the water dispenser and the ice maker are not related. They are completely separate water lines and electrical circuits. That being said, you need to make sure the water supply to the unit has proper water pressure and there are no kinks in the water line. If you hear the water valve solenoid energize when power is applied, the issue will be the water valve. Now in reference to the ice dispense, if there is ice in the bin and the ice door is opening but ice will not drop, you should remove the ice bin and hold the door switch in and operate the ice dispense paddle. If you can hold the yoke when it is trying to turn, either it or the threads on the motor shaft are stripped. Let us know if we can assist you further.

Hello Larry, If you are getting water pressure to the back of the unit and the fill tube isn't frozen up, the ice maker assembly 4317943 has most likely failed. If the fill tube is frozen up, the water valve WP2188542 needs to be replaced.
