The Door Spring is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It assists in balancing and supporting the door during opening and closing motions.

Causes of a bad door spring can include metal fatigue from years of compression and extension during cycles. The spring can also become misshaped if over-tightened during maintenance or installation.

Symptoms of a bad door spring for a dishwasher include:

  • Doors that slam shut too forcefully or rapidly
  • Difficulty smoothly opening or closing the door
  • An imbalanced feeling when lifting or lowering the door

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, and Roper built-in dishwashers.

For Whirlpool Door Spring (Part Number: OEM18059502)

Hello Linda, This could be the fault of the springs WPW10337934 but more commonly, the bushing WP8268990 is the part that tends to break. I would recommend pulling the unit out about 6 inches to see exactly what parts are needed before ordering, but one of each should be ordered for each side since, when one breaks, excessive wear is exerted on the other side and it normally fails soon after the first fails.

Hello Lynn. You need to look and see if the spring or the bushing broke and is causing the door to drop in the unit.

James, If you have the original outer door panel, You may have a "spring fatigue" issue, but you should be able to adjust the spring tension " • If the door closes too quickly, decrease the spring tension by moving the spring end toward the front of the dishwasher. • If the door falls open, increase the spring tension by moving the spring end toward the back of the dishwasher. • Springs should be in the same notches on left and right sides." If you've installed a custom panel it may be too heavy for the springs to compensate for.
