For Whirlpool Dryer Thermal Cut-Off Kit (Part Number: OEM9282978)

1 Answer

Dwight, Aside from a clogged vent (which you said is clear) the possibilities would be that either the high limit themostat is faulty or a possible stuck relay on the control board of the unit.

K. Wolfe, This issue sounds like it would be most likely caused by a wiring issue or a bad control board. You would want to check the harness between the main board and the user interface first and if this checks ok then it sounds like the main board would be the issue.

Eric for Model Number MEDB800VQ0

My Maytag Bravos 400 quiet w/ steam powers on and lights up but does not start. The start switch appears good since it toggles through and the display moves between pause and start. There is also an audible clicking when the start switch is pressed, which I gather means a good door switch. When the dryer failed, my wife heard a load pop and I smelled the burnt electrical smell. I have continuity on the blower thermal fuse (with the two blue wires removed), continuity on the thermostat thermal fuse (black and red wires off), and continuity between the posts on the thermostat where the red/white and black wires attach. For the thermostat, I did not remove the two position connector with the two small red wires that is between the red/white and the black. The belts look to be OK too and I have 12K ohms across the thermister (unconnected). Are there any other thermal or limiting control devices that can be checked? Can I check the motor while it is still connected using a meter?

Bucky, Even though you checked the vent make sure that it is definitely clear from the blower wheel to the outside of the home. The cycling thermostat is not the same as a thermal limit switch. The cycling thermostat will cycle the heating element based off the exhaust temperature coming from the unit. It is possible that the cycling thermostat would be faulty.

Paul, It is possible that the breaker tripping is being caused by a weak breaker. You would want to have this checked first. Also look for any wire that may be touching metal and insulation being gone off of it.

Brent, If the thermal fuse on the heater housing keeps blowing then the issue would most likely be a bad thermistor.

LJ, check the thermal fuse WP3392519 on the blower housing, if it opens because of an overheat situation, the motor won't start or run.
