Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Thermal Fuse (Part Number: OEM18024984)

1 Answer

Hello Mogle1999, A thermal fuse is opened by high temperatures. This is caused by a lack of air circulation, normally a ducting issue with the home ducting system. Flexible ducting is not recommended since it slows air flow and traps lint and moisture. Manufacturers recommend the use of solid, non flexible, rigid ducting. It must be 4 inch inner diameter for proper air flow. The other things that can cause this is something in the blower wheel like a softener sheet, a missing seal inside the dryer causing recirculation of the heated air, or the dryer is in a small enclosed room and when the door is shut while the unit is running, the unit cannot pull in any room temperature air.

Bob, Yes, it's possible to have "blown" the fuse(s) when the wire shorted to ground. there are other parts that could have been affected. First thing is check the breakers at the fuse box, reset them both a couple of times and make sure they're both set and locked. Get the model number, and we can get you more information to help you diagnose and repair your dryer. Thanks

Kathleen, The rear panel of your unit does not come off. In order to access the thermal fuse on your unit, there is a panel at the bottom off the front that has clips at the top of it that you have to release in order to get the panel off. This will give you access to the heater, blower motor and all lower components of the dyer.

Viviane, With the thermal fuse blowing the venting is the first thing to have checked. Check from the blower wheel to the outside of the home. Will also want to test the cycling thermostat.

Ken, If the unit is heating on the no heat cycle then the issue will be with the timer WPW10185982 contacts sticking for heat. If it is just overheating on the heat cycle then you will want to check the venting of the unit to ensure that the vent is not clogged. Check form the blower wheel to the outside of your home.

Scott, With getting any reading on the thermal fuse would indicate that the thermal fuse is good.

Tami P for Model Number 11066812692

The dryer has stopped twice like with 10-20 mins left in the cycle. The other day it smelled hot. I stopped it immediately. I have since this taken the back off and cleaned massive amounts of lint out of all areas of this dryer. ( I bought it 2nd hand) . I've testes the ohms on all switches and elements in the back. The thermal fuse is carrying a high ohms reading like 18.9 vers .1 on everything else (digital meter) the bulb is also silver now and isn't clear anymore. Am I on the right track with thermal fuse & light bulb?. Light bulb was covered with lint.

1 Answer

Tami, The thermal fuse having resistance would indicate that the fuse is good. As for the bulb it does sound like it is bad if it is silver. For the issue of the unit shutting off with 20 minutes remaining could be caused by the heavy lint build up.

Mariel, Would suggest checking power to the motor when the start button is hit. If there is power to the motor but will not turn then the issue will be a faulty motor. If there is no power getting to the motor then the issue will be the control board.
