The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor Kit (Part Number: OEM12027516)

Larry, You will first want to check the evaporator fan motor to make sure that the fan motor is working. If the fan motor is working then you will want to check to make sure that the evaporator coils located int he freezer are not impacted with ice. If they are then this would be a defrost issue. You would want to check the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater to make sure that both have continuity. if one does not have continuity then replace the part. If they both have continuity then this would be a faulty control board. If the coils have a nice even frost pattern then the thermistor would likely be the issue and is located in the light area at the top of the unit and will have to use a flat blade top take out the light area to replace the thermistor.

Dominic, There will be a thermistor in the freezer that you access by removing the control panel and the duct assembly from the refrigerator side that is for the temp in the freezer. The part number for the thermistor is WP2188819. The resistance of the thermistor in the unit should be 2.7K ohms at 77 degrees. If the themistor checks ok then the main control board would be the other thing for regulating temp in the freezer.

Yes I have a question about my freezer and refrigerator refrigerator side keeps freezing up I replace the thermistor in the refrigerator side and temperature control unit and was wondering if there is a thermistor in the freezer because after replacing the parts on the refrigerator side it is still freezing on the refrigerator side the dampener is working fine too so I thought a thermistor in your freezer could be causing the problem just wondering where I could be located.

1 Answer

Dominic, If there is a thermistor on this unit for the freezer it would be either located under the damper as it goes into the freezer or on the wall of the freezer compartment. This issue sounds more likely that the control board would be the issue with both sections freezing.

This refrigerator has two thermistors. I am trying to purchase replacements for both the refrigerator and freezer side. I can only find for the refrigerator side. Can you provide a part number for the Freezer thermistor? Also what is the definitive proper location of the freezer thermistor?I have seen videos where it is tucked in the shelving railing and others where it is out in the airflow path between the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Where should it be placed?

1 Answer

Ed, The thermistor will be the same part number for both the refrigerator and freezer section. For where it goes, When you remove the damper it will side in under the damper and will be in the little space under where it comes through.

Gary for Model Number GX5SHDXVD01

I have a whirlpool reefer that builds up solid ice about every 2 to 3 days at the bottom of the freezer as well as the top of the freezer along the front area at the door. The gasket looks great, fits very snug along the entire door when closed, and I used the dollar bill test and it holds it quite tightly along the entire gasket. I have had this problem for about 3 months now, and recently the fresh food compartment has lost temp, sometimes rising to as high as 60 degrees, I realize I have a thermistor or Main Control Board problem causing this, but the gasket has me going crazy. I am a retired tech with 35 years experience and far from a novice in this area.Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Gary, You will want to check the drain for the defrost to make sure that it is not clogged and if it is clean it out and flush the lines with hot water. You will then want to install the drain tube W10619951 to correct this issue.

Hello Robert. You will need to look in the control panel on the unit. The thermistor is located inside the control panel.

Hello Terry, This can be caused by a frost build-up inside of or the failure of the damper control WP67003903 located at the top rear of the fresh food compartment. The thermistors will not cause the inability to set the controls so I would verify all electrical connections including the connection at the door hinge.
