The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It functions as a temperature sensor that helps regulate and monitor the internal temperature of the refrigerator and freezer compartments.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include regular wear and tear, exposure to extreme temperatures, or electrical issues. A malfunctioning thermistor can lead to inaccurate temperature readings, which can affect the refrigerator's cooling performance and efficiency.

Symptoms of a bad thermistor include:

  • The refrigerator not maintaining the correct temperature
  • Inconsistent cooling, with some areas being too warm or too cold
  • The refrigerator running continuously or cycling on and off too frequently
  • Error codes related to temperature issues displayed on the control panel

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Kai, You should open the unit and clear the ice and the defrost drain. The defrost drain is normally the cause of this issue so clearing the defrost drain will normally correct the issue. After clearing the drain you should chase it with a piece of weedeater line to make sure it has no debris in it and then pour about 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent algae formation.

Brs for Model Number WZF79R20DW00

The freezer iced up in the evaporator, blocking the vents and stopping the evaporator fan. Checked the Thermistor for continuity - Yes continuity. Replaced the control box with new. Unit worked for about three weeks then malfunctioned again. Again, checked Thermistor and gets a continuity reading. Replaced the Control Box a second time and same problem re-occur about two weeks later. Defrost Heater is OK: Thermistor still read Good for continuity Could the Thermistor be the problem? Working intermittently? Model: WZF79R20DW00

1 Answer

BRS, The thermistor should have a resistance reading to it. The resistance at room temp should read approximately 2.7K ohms. If it is not then this would be the issue.
