The Start Device Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is a kit that includes the start relay and overload, both of which are crucial components for the proper operation of the compressor. The start relay is responsible for initiating the compressor's operation by providing an electrical boost to start the motor.

Causes of a faulty start device kit can include electrical component failure, power surges, or damage due to wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a bad start device kit may include:

  • The compressor not running or cycling on and off frequently
  • Inadequate cooling or fluctuations in temperature
  • Unusual noises coming from the refrigerator

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Start Device Assembly (Part Number: OEM18049767)

1 Answer

Joe, Since you have replaced the start device and still hear the overload clicking then the compressor has most likely failed. You can do a resistance test on the three compressor terminals. They will be in a pyramid form and the two that are side by side are your start and run pins and the one by itself is your common pin. So testing resistance between start and common and then run and common should equal the same resistance if you test between start and run. So if start and common have 6 ohms of resistance and run and common have 4 then start and run should read 10 ohms. If you decide to repair you would need a sealed system technician and is a expensive repair.

Steve, The compressor is probably hot from trying to start. You can probably hear the relay clicking every couple of minutes if you listen. If your getting 120 vac to the compressor and it won't start then the relay would need to be replaced WPW10189190

Rodney, If the unit is running properly and cooling properly then this would be normal but I would suggest to check to make sure that the condenser fan is running.

Bob Threm for Model Number Whirlpool ED5LVAXVB00

The fridge and freezer sides started warming up. Inspection showed the compressor was not running, very hot to the touch. Unplug it for 30 min and plugged it back in. Compressor makes sound for about 10-15 sec then CLICK, nothing. Does this every 3 min or so. I pulled the start relay combo and shook it, nothing rattling. I checked the resistance across the compressor taps and they're 10 ohms or less. I've confirmed there's 120 VAC on the power line to the start relay / compressor. All signs point to the start relay combo, but I'm concerned since it's rattling it's not the problem. Thoughts?

Bob, A start relay that is not ratting does not mean that it is not bad. The start device would be the most likely cause for this issue.

Hello Laly, If the model number is actually ED5GVEXVD07, you should remove the compressor start device WPW10189190 from the side of the compressor and shake it. If it rattles, replace it. If not, there is a good chance the thermostat WP2198202 has failed.
