The Upper Wash Arm is an OEM component specifically designed for Whirlpool dishwashers. It is responsible for spraying water across the upper rack during the wash cycle to effectively clean dishes. It measures approximately 7.5 inches long by 1.37 inches wide.

Causes of a bad upper wash arm can include mineral or lime scale buildup that clogs the spray nozzles, or damage to the arm itself such as cracks or breaks that compromise its spraying ability.

Symptoms of a bad upper wash arm include:

  • Inadequate cleaning of upper rack dishes
  • Dirty dishes after a cycle
  • Clogged or blocked spray nozzles
  • Visible damage or wear to the arm

This OEM replacement wash arm from Whirlpool is compatible with KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models as well.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Upper Wash Arm (Part Number: OEM9360075)

Ed, there would be two connecting pins that are only available with the upper wash arm 8193504 that would be used to secure it to the water outlet.

Hello Dana, The dishwasher will not wash properly with the upper spray arm 8193504 missing. All of the water pressure would be lost from the missing part and the other spray arms will be non-effective. The water supply tube WPW10077863 should be replaced also.

Mark, When you pull the track out there will be a slot on the side that you would push the clip with a flat blade screwdriver and then pull out on the rack stop. This should allow the upper rack to come out.

MF, We would need to have the model number of the unit to be able to advise for sure but in most cases the pin only comes with the spray arm.

Hi. I found the upper spray arm and retainer pin (the longer plastic piece) resting in the upper dishwasher rack. Turns out that the smaller plastic piece (nut?) was still sitting in the feed tub. I reattached the spray arm, but it seems quite loose and wobbly. Also, when I reattached it, there was no audible snap between the pin and the nut. While nothing on the "nut" appears broken, it's possible that something snapped off. Do you think I need new attachments? Could you send a close-up photo of the nut? Thanks.

1 Answer

Joan, Unfortunately we do not have a up close photo of the nut we can send. It does sound like you would need a new upper wash arm if it is not snapping into place.

Regarding removal of the upper dish tray, the videos show a plastic clip that has a button on the front that you press in and the clip removes. In my specific unit, there is no button on the front for removal. There are two plastic clips that hold the tray from falling out when you pull it to empty dishes, but not the clip with a button as shown. There looks like a small area on the top of the rail where I could push down a small plastic retainer-looking thing with a very small screwdriver and then pull the plastic piece forward for removal. Is that the proper way to remove these retaining plastic pieces? I'd hate to break them.

1 Answer

Tim, In the center of the rail on the inner part there is a little tab that would would have to release with a small screwdriver. Then you would slide the stop out.

Stan, The upper spray arm isn't the likely issue, especially since you've checked and cleaned it. The next check needs to be at the water supply. First check and make sure the float and switch operate, raise and lower the float to make sure it moves freely and you can hear the switch "click". Then start the dishwasher on a regular wash cycle, allow the dishwasher to fill and wash for a few minutes (5 mins.) then unlatch the door and remove the lower rack. The water level in the bottom of the tub should be at most 1/4 inch below the element it should be closer or touching the element, if not there's not enough water in the dishwasher to properly distribute the water and produce enough pressure to operate the spray arms(s) and clean the dishes on all levels.

Hello Joel, The new spray arm 8193504 comes with the retainers to install it with. It installs from the inside of the machine so you won't have to pull it out or anything. You should look around in the bottom of the unit for the smalle retainers so they won't get into the impeller.
