The Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool side-by-side models. This valve regulates water entry to the ice maker.

Causes of failure can include worn solenoid coils leading to inconsistent opening/closing, stripped plastic stems from over-torquing common with mineral buildup areas, or severed wire connections rendering the valve inoperable.

Symptoms involve:

  • Inoperative or slow ice production
  • Ice maker not filling or making ice cubes fully
  • Water leaking or pooling near the valve body

This is a genuine Whirlpool OEM replacement this part is also compatible with Maytag, Jenn-Air, and some Kenmore models.

Note: On some models, there is a separate water connector from this valve. Order part# WPW10445062 for that connector.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Valve-Inlt (Part Number: OEM17955354)

Mark, If you just turn the off the icemaker this should allow the dispenser to keep working. If that does not correct the issue then there would be no way to do this but it typically only takes a couple of days for the part to arrive as long as it is in stock.

Dee, The tubing and connector that come with this valve will not always be needed but would be the tubing that goes to the icemaker.

Teresa, You will want to cycle the icemaker and once you cycle it you will want to check to see if the water valve to see if there is voltage getting to the valve. If there is then check to make sure that the fill tube is not frozen and if it is not then this will be a faulty valve. If the valve is not getting 120 vac then this will be a faulty icemaker.

Jerry for Model Number Whirlpool GS2SHEXNS00

My ice maker quit a few years ago so I removed it and just went with ice trays. No big deal, until one day I opened up the freezer and found ice all down the inside of the freezer. I pulled out the freezer supply line out and just ran the line down into my basement in case it ever leaked. Well sometime over the past few days it looks like when the water dispenser on the door was used it triggered the icemaker water supply too, because I have a large amount of water in the basement bucket I put there just in case. I had my wife go up and use the water dispenser and found that this is the case. After she was done the water still comes out, not that much but still drips pretty constant. Is this a faulty water valve that needs to be replaced? As mentioned before we only use the water dispenser, no ice is being made anymore. Thank you!

Hello Jerry. Yes it sounds like the valve is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Hello Jan, The water valve W10822681 should be replaced and the fill tube thawed since it will freeze up with clear ice if the water valve fails.

Hello Alex. Make sure the water is turned on and make sure the filter is good. If so, then replace the water valve W10822681 on the unit.

Morris, The water tube coil WP2256126 is the water reservoir(basically). It is a replaceable part, and you may want to consider it. Try this first, remove the water filter for a few days to a week, use the dispenser a few times a day, then see if the odor subsides in time. In some cases, water with a low chlorine content after it is filtered will allow deposits to develop and cause an odor in the water. Allowing the chlorinated water to flow through the dispenser tubing will usually remove the deposits and the odor and taste will subside.

Bob, Make sure the tube ends aren't distorted, they have to be as round as possible, since you're sure the ends are cut straight and there are no burrs, or shavings remaining on the tube ends, try this method. Press in on the collar that surrounds the water tube, insert the tube as far as possible, (until the tube bottoms out and stops) release the collar and pull out on the tube "slightlly" to make sure the locking mechanism grips the water tube, and the tube is inside the fitting enough to seat against/in the "O" ring seal inside the fitting.

Jason, After replacing the water valve it would normally take anywhere from 2 1/2 to 4 hours for the first batch of ice. It may come sooner but that is a relative suggestion. Then it will make ice about every 1 1/2 hours.
