The Water Inlet Valve is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dishwashers. The water inlet valve is responsible for regulating the flow of water into the dishwasher. It is connected to the main water supply and opens and closes as needed to allow water to enter the appliance at the appropriate time and in the correct quantity.

Causes of a bad Water Inlet Valve can include mineral deposits that clog the valve, a failure in the valve's solenoid, or wear and tear over time that affects the valve's ability to open and close properly.

Symptoms of a bad Water Inlet Valve include:

  • Dishwasher not filling with water
  • Water filling too slowly or too quickly
  • Water leaking from the dishwasher
  • Unusual noises during the fill cycle

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Note: The white plug connector can be disconnected to allow for connection of the dishwasher wiring if needed.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18058863)

Jeff, You can only test power going to the valve. For this issue, check to see if there are broken or damaged spray arms, if the spray arms are good then this will be a faulty water valve.

I had water leaking from door corners, ordered a new door seal from you guys, still have leaks (not the door seal) during the wash cycle from below door and dripping from overflow. I have tracked the problem to a high water fill level. The overflow switch doing its job and I timed the fill cycle at 2 minutes and 25 seconds and that is correct, the overflow switch kicks in and shuts it off early. The water level is at least .5 inches over the heating element and the inlet valve does shut off tight. It seems that the fill rate is too high, I am on a well at 40-60 psi. Does the inlet fill valve have a flow control in it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the fast service on the door seal.

Hello Jim, This is normally caused by a water valve WPW10327249 that closes too slowly. This is either caused by low water pressure to the valve or a failing water inlet valve. If the water pressure at the valve is actually 40 to 60 PSI, the issue will be the water valve.

Joseph, Without a model number, it is difficult to help you but open the door and see if there's water in the tub. If it is filling then more than likely the cause is the wash pump motor.

Hello Scott, you'll want to check for power at the motor W11133712 when it should be washing. Unplug motor connection and test each wire to chassis ground for 120v, if no voltage is present you'll need to replace board part number W10479763. Thanks!

Hello Tony. It could be if the unit is not filling fast enough. The valve may not be opening all the way. Also check for a bad float switch on the unit as well. If all is good, then the board is all that is left.

Hello John, A high pitched squeal is normally the indication of something contacting a pump impeller. The pump that runs during the water fill is the circulation pump WPW10757217. You should open the unit and check for debris and many times the debris can be removed without replacing any parts. The determining factor is if the impeller has been damaged or not.

Flaco, With the dishes on the top of the unit getting wet but not the bottom rack then the issue will most likely be caused by the diverter motor which is part number W10537869.

Michael, The fill valve is a very good possibility. Here's a quick easy check to make. Start the dishwasher in the regular cycle, let the machine fill and wash for 5 minutes. Unlatch the door, wait a second or so, open the door and remove the lower rack. Look at the water level in the bottom of the tub. The water level should cover the filter plate by 1/2 inch deep. You can also look at the lower spray arm support, the water level should cover about 1/3 of the lower spray arm support. If not, theres not enough water in the tub and pump to pressurize and operate the spray arms properly.

Washer when started will not fill. The drain pump will start and empty the washer and continue running. I have removed the overflow sensor and it function tested sat. I removed the fill valve and applied 12v AC directly to the valve on the bench and it hummed and opened, power remove closed. The valve makes no noise when the washer is started. After depressing the cancel and the machine cycling off, in approx. 5-10 minute it restarts and the drain motor will hum until the breaker is opened. Would this be the controller or the drain pump?

1 Answer

W E Raasch, The issue with the unit would most likely be a faulty control board. The control board is sending power to the drain pump and control board would need to be replaced.
