Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Tank Assembly (Part Number: OEM18016818)

1 Answer

Hello Lloyd, If there is no water and no ice there is most likely a water pressure issue to the unit. The water dispenser and the icemaker are two separate circuits and it is doubtful that both have failed at the same time. Turn the water off to the refrigerator and remove the water line from the water valve and place it into a bucket. Turn the water on and verify water pressure. If none, contact a plumber since this is going to be a home plumbing issue. If there is water pressure, remove the water valve and hold it over the bucket with the large water line disconnected without touching the electrical connections. Have someone press the dispense paddle with the doors closed and the setting to water. If good, water should shoot from the bottom of the valve into the bucket. If not, replace the water valve. If so, remove the small water line and blow through it. If you cannot blow through it, the fill tube is frozen. To check the water tank, remove the drawers in the fresh food compartment and heat the water tank with a hair dryer for 10 or 15 minutes. If this restores water dispense, set the fresh food compartment to a colder setting and and the freezer setting to a warmer setting. Please let us know if you have any more issues.

Ray, With the issue that you are having, this would most likely be caused by a faulty filter head assembly which is part of the water tank. You would need part number WP12956202.

Heather W for Model Number MFI2266AEU

We replaced our water filter a few months ago, but the water tastes disgusting. I have to flush about 4 cups of water before it tastes decent, and I have to do that every time I get water. upon researching, the culprit is most likely the reservoir? All I'm seeing for this model is the water tank/head assy. Is this the correct part? Will this fix the bad tasting water? If so, please give instructions on how to replace. I want to make sure this is something I can do on my own before ordering the part. Thanks

Hello Heather. Yes, that is the correct part if the tank is the reason for the taste in the water.

Michael, Unfortunately there is no way to test the filter head itself but you will want to make sure that the filter in the unit is good. You can also access the rear wall of the refrigerator compartment and remove the panel to access the water valve. Disconnect the water valve and see if there is water coming through the valve to the dispenser or the icemaker. In most cases when both ice and water are not working the water filter and tank assembly would be the issue.

Dave, To remove the water tank, turn off water to the unit. Disconnect the water line that supplies water tank from water supply. Remove the crispers and shelves from the right side of the fresh food compartment. Remove covers on back wall by inserting a screwdriver in to slots to release tabs. Disconnect water line from the outlet of tank to the inlet of water valve by holding tubing collar stationary and pulling water tube out of valve. Remove the water tank and tubing. Reverse procedure to reassemble.

Hello Kevin, This is an air circulation problem. It can be caused by several issues but the most common can be corrected by adjusting the temperatures. When the unit is in the cooling mode, the fan in the freezer is running and this mixes and stirs the air which equalizes the temperature throughout the compartment. If the fresh food section is set too warm, the unit sits idle too long and the cold air in the top section will settle to the bottom of the compartment. This freezes the water tank WP12956202. The tank will rupture and leak. Replacing the water tank will only correct the problem caused by lack of air circulation. For this reason, it is advised to turn the temperature in the freezer warmer and the fresh food section colder. I know this sounds backwards but in doing this you are calling for the fan to run longer which keeps the colder, heavier air from settling to the bottom of the fresh food compartment and causing the issue to reccur.
