I removed the drum, split it in half and replaced the bearings, seal and tub o-ring. Whirlpool did not offer the bearings without purchasing the back half of the tub for $350.00. I purchased a kit with a new seal for $75.00 and replaced them myself.

Loud banging on fast spin cycle and smoke the first time we heard the banging Salim A. • Chantilly , VA • February 23, 2016
Per google and this site, the symptoms of the machine were identical to what was described for a corroded / broken spider. I followed the instructions from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFXp2X99mQs and took apart my machine. It wasn't the exact model, but more than 90% of the instructions and parts were the same. If you've done any type of work on cars (changing brakes, oil change), you should be able to do this without any problems. You'll need a ratchet set, screw drivers,...

Noisy during the washer spin cycle and leaking water John P. • Wasilla , AK • April 16, 2022
The noise turned out to be the bottom bearing between the belt pulley and the transmission. Once apart an easy replacement. But you did need some tools to replace the bearing as in snap ring pliers and bearing puller. The water leak was the top rubber seal which is part of the seal kit. I had to make a puller out of some chain and a 2 jaw-bearing puller to the top of the transmission shaft to get the trunnion off but once it was off the rest was a snap. The video was a big help. Tested the...
