I removed two screws under the counter that held the dishwasher in place and slid the machine forward a few inches where I could access the spring. I looked at the good spring, on the left side, noting exactly how each end of the spring was attached. Then I removed the broken spring and linkage, on the right side. I tried attaching the new spring with the door open, but that required the spring to stretch a long ways, and I couldn't manage it, even when I gripped it with pliers. By simply closing the door, I brought the attachment points closer together and it was then pretty easy to attach the parts. First, I put the new spring linkage in its place, then I attached the spring to the linkage, then I attached the long arm of the spring to the rail at the bottom of the machine. Now the door opens like always and didn't slam down and let the dish rack slide out. I was fortunate in that the spring on the left side was still in place and served as a guide to tell me what to do with the spring on the right side.
