How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP6891553 / WR17X22072 Water Filter Housing Assembly

Replace the parts of water filter housing and tube assembly. 

Did trouble shoot and found the Water Filter Manifold was not working. Replacement of water filter did not contact the activation valve in the manifold which did not allow the flow of water to the ice maker or water dispenser. Replaced the Manifold and now the system is working fine. 

When I did a routine filter change, the water stopped working. I thought it might be the filter and reinstalled the old filter but it no longer worked either. I installed the filter bypass plug thinking maybe there was air in the line or something and it didn't work either. Finally I found somewhere online that there's a tiny little button on the Water Filter Housing, that keeps water from leaking during a filter change, and when the the filter is installed, the button is depressed and lets water flow. I guess our little button thing wore down and was not getting depressed enough when the filter was installed. We purchaed a new Water Filter Housing & Tube Assembly from AppliancePartsPros and now water is flowing perfectly from the door and ice production has started again. 

Turned off power to refrigerator and water. Remove access cover panel to remove water line. Removed two cover screws from back of refrigerator. Remove water filter cover housing. Remove water filter and two screws. Pull water line assembly through the front of refrigerator. line to Install in reverse order of disassembly. One note you will have to bend the water line to install cover on back of refrigerator. Check for leaks and plug back in refrigerator. Run about a gallon of water to clear any air and containments.

I called and spoke with Cindy, who immediately from hearing the symptoms diagnosed the problem as the Water Filter Housing Assembly. I felt it might be the water pump. Cindy asked if I had a multimeter, which I did but wasn't sure how it worked. She immediately sent me a link to a video so I could check the pump. Ultimately Cindy was right. As a senior citizen I asked if any part of the shipping could be waived, which it couldn't. Part arrived and after watching an APP.com video on how to install it, I tackled the issue. In less than 20 minutes I had removed and replaced the housing assembly. I ordered the part and It was delivered promptly. I had some difficulty installing the compression fitting. The original fitting was blunt shaped replacement tube was cone-shaped it was difficult to get the threads on the net to grasp properly. After a little trouble I got it together and it is working fine. 

Alternately took both ends of the water system hoses loose to check for flow. Since there was none, the only place for the obstruction was the valve in the water filter housing. Replaced the filter with the bypass plug, but still no water flow. Replaced the water filter housing and the problem was solved. Delivery was amazing!!! I ordered the part Wednesday afternoon, received it Thursday afternoon and had it installed before dinner. 

Installed the water filter housing assembly using the excellent video as a reference. The parts arrived quickly and the installation was very easy. Problem solved. 

Read about others with the same issue. Changed the water filter and then had no water. Tried another filter and had same issue. Put a hard rubber washer in the filter to push up the little tit that shuts off water flow. Got a slow stream for a couple months and then it stopped again. Installed the assembly in about an hour or so, start to finish and have a water flow from the dispenser that we haven't had in years. A great fix and no doubt saved $$$ by doing the repair myself.
