Did a problem solve search on AppliancePartsPros and figured out that the problem is a common one and that the 4 drum rollers were probably at fault. I ordered the rollers and a new belt. The parts were inexpensive and the repair video was excellent. After disassembly of the dryer, I discovered that the rollers, while worn, were ok and I had to look further to find the "thump". Upon inspection of the drum itself, I discovered a 3 inch crack in the welded seam of the drum. This crack crossed the roller "channel" and each rotation would allow a roller to "fall" into the small gap and make the thump sound. Since I did not have a spare drum sitting on the shelf, I would attempt to repair the drum as best I could. I settled on using thick aluminum duct tape, using several layers to build a bridge over the cracked seam on both the inside and outside surfaces of the drum. The aluminum was thin enough to line the channel for the rollers so that the repair would not make its own thump. The aluminum tape is designed to seal heated ducts, but time will tell if the heat of the dryer is too much for the adhesive. Using the tape on the inside of the drum, if it holds, will minimize any risk of snagging any fabric in the dryer. I went ahead and changed the rollers and installed the new belt, buttoned up the dryer, tested it. Ran like a new unit, with no thumps. If the repair fails, then I will order a replacement drum.
