How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6019708 / WPW10330804 Speed Governor

Replaced speed control plate and speed governor. Adjusted speed control plate to desired speed settings. Mixer does not perform quite like new, but is over 40 years old and still very functional. We may replace other parts in the future if necessary. 

Replaced all parts in the transmission. 

Ordered parts and installed them 

Replaced the speed control plate, phase control board and speed governor. 

Rebuilt the entire mixer after watching Matt's video. The problem was speed governor was burned out. I replaced the armature also. Works great again. Thanks Matt. Ron 

Replaced the motor speed control board.. I also replaced the power cord and attempted to replace the fly ball governor. 1) The fly ball governor did not fiy and the old was was used instead. 2) The strain relief grommet on the new power cord was made for a later model and therefore did not fit but I was able to modify the key hole slot to a straight slot by filing the flanges to cha change the shape. The end result worked perfectly 3) During the replcement and adjusting of the speed control board, I noticed that there is a slight interference between the plastic end of the speed selector that and the opening of the control board where the shift end goes through. The interference is enough to do cause a momentary interruption of the main contacts of the board. Otherwise everything functions as it should. 

Removed control plate and speed governor. Suggest you measure how far the governor pushes back on to armature shaft. I didn't think about it and had to reset as I couldn't set the proper speed. Remember, it is a force fit for the last few millimeters. Installed new speed control plate and set the slow rpm on stir ~60 and setting 6 speed ~180. The low setting was intermittent. Observed the contact points were not flush and with a small screw driver, had to move the stationary contact up slightly to make it fully flush. Rechecked and works! Replaced speed control plate and phase control board and governor. 

I installed a new Speed Control Plate, Phase Control Board, and Speed Governor. My wife bought this KitchenAid K5SS mixer for $45 many years ago and it has always run fast. She mentioned the speed control problem to me and I did some research with YouTube, then I bought and installed the new parts. It is running like new; my wife is very happy with it. The AppliancePartsPros.com installation videos are excellent and made the repair quick and simple. Adjusting the speed control took most of the time, but well worth it. 

Replace the 3 items that have control of the mixer's speed. The video is not totally clear on the spacing distance of the speed control plate ( measure behind the nut to the plastic control board) It took a little time to adjust the speed of the mixer. The old speed did not have a spring holder, and none was placed on the new replacement Not sure if I needed the governor but it was easy to replace all 3 parts at the same time.
