Symptoms of a bad Speed Governor include:

  • Inconsistent mixing speeds
  • Mixer running too fast or too slow
  • Mixer not starting or stopping unexpectedly
  • Irregular performance during mixing

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Speed Governor (Part Number: OEM18059133)

1 Answer

Gary, The speed plate is where it needs to be adjusted. There are the upper nuts that you can adjust but also there is a bottom screw that may need to be adjusted to get the speed correct.

Ken for Model Number K45SS

Surges at lowest speed setting (average rpm = 120). Adjustment of speed plate adjusting screws has no impact at stir setting. With mixer running, can even push the top of the plate all the way in, and mixer will not appear to slow down. Mid to high range settings do seem to increase speed slightly. Removed governor as a test. With governor removed, mixer ran at a constant speed throughout all settings -- but no hunting. Was suspecting governor, but this device is so simple with just a spring and two weights which seem to all be intact. Speed plate has no visual defects and speed board has no visual defects.

Ken, the control plate spring would need to be inspected to ensure it is securely attached. If it is, the failure would be in the phase control board WPW10325124 (120-Volt phase control board. For 240-volt board use W11174552).

Pikmachine, The governor [AP6019708} is a very good possibility, but, it is more likely an issue with the speed control plate and or the spring WPW10119326 Speed Control Plate, WP3183680 Spring, Control Plate. If the spring and control plate are properly attached to each other and adjusted properly, then consider the governor and the phase control board.

Monica for Model Number KitchenAid RRK90

My mixer was only working sporadically in stir and 2nd speed. It wasn't going fast at those speed (I've read that happens but it was not happening to me). When i moved it past 2nd speed it would stop and just not do anything. I took some screws off and was looking at it and then I put it back together, and ever since then it wouldn't turn on at all. I then replaced the speed control and phase board and it still wont turn on. Can you help me?

1 Answer

Monica, RRK90 is not the correct model number for your KitchenAid mixer, we need it to properly research the issue and parts needed. In the meantime, " I then replaced the speed control and phase board, and it still won't turn on" did you adjust the new speed control board according to the "how-to" video? Could you have left a wire loose or miswired the new parts? is the speed selection spring and lever installed and attached to the speed control Plate. Once you get us a model number we can assist you properly and efficiently. Thanks,

Novice, You will need to separate the upper and lower half of the unit, check to make sure that the screw for the lever is not loose and check to make sure that the spring is not damaged.

Madalin, you will want to check the phase control plate which is located inside the unit towards the back. If there is a voltage drop from the phase board to the motor after running for that length of time, it can cause your motor to slow down. You will also want to check the spring running from the control lever because if it weakens, it can do the same thing. If the voltage drops to your motor, you may be looking at replacing the phase control board WPW10325124.

Randy, You will want to check the motor brushes to make sure that they are not damaged but this does sound likely that the governor could be the issue.

Mike, You will want to start by checking the control plate on the unit. Test power into the plate and then to the motor from the plate.
