How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6030932 / W10823704 Surface Heating Element (Top Burner)

Ordered the parts. Bolted them in. The only problem I had was on the glass top element. The wiring had different width terminals. I did not see the second set of terminals included with the replacement part and the instructions only mentioned adding extensions for length, not size. I ended up changing the terminals on my ranges factory wiring. I could have cut off the end and attached the extension with the supplied wire nuts if I had looked around more thoroughly. 

Installed the new one 

Replaced burner element with new one. Works fine 

Ordered replacement element, removed "glass" range top and removed old element and installed new element. Very easy replacement, the only glitch was the instructions included with the replacement part. Based on the instructions, since the old and new elements were the same, it should have been an easy swap, however, two of the electrical connections on the new element were a different size than the same connections on the old element. While the new part included "jumpers" that did have the correct size connectors, according to the instructions, they were to be used only if the old and new element connectors were in different locations causing the original wires to be too short. While I did not need the extra length the jumpers provided I had to cut and use them because they had the correct size connector. This worked well, but in calling customer service, it took forever to attempt to explain my situation and get an answer. It would have been so much easier if I could have spoken directly with a technician instead of using the customer service rep as a go between. I am a do it yourself repair person and not an expert, so I did not want to cut and splice wires on my range if it was not necessary. I'm still happy with the replacement part and the price I was charged. 

Removed the Glass Top (9 screws). Replaced the element (2 clips and 4 terminals) 

Purchased replacement. My son actually installed it - very easy! Only took several minutes. 

The replacement burner was configured differently than the faulty one, although it was similar. I had to remove the connector from one of the wires and then add the supplied length of wire before connecting to the replacement burner. It took me two tries before the burner worked properly. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous doing this type of repair for the first time, but in the end it all worked out for just over $70.00, a far cry cheeper than the service center quoted. 

Check element resistance, determined coil broken, removed it and ordered replacement. 

Replacement with limiter. Simple access and removal/installation. A few screws, and connections. Identification of terminals is important for proper connections, and limiter function.
