How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6026333 / W10870869 Field Assembly

First thing I've noticed was a bad smell and slightly slower speed. Next thing I've checked the brushes (they were burned on the edges) that usually guide toward the burned windings on the armature, sometimes even field. Since Appliance Parts asking $13 for the field assembly I've decided to change both Armature and Field. Thanks to Appliance Parts for surprisingly fast shipping (received both parts next day). 

Tested the motor for continuity and realized that the field was broken. Sure enough, it was melted and burnt on the bottom side. So bought this part and replaced it which fixed the problem. The only thing left to do is calibrate the motor speed but I need another tool for that. In the mean time, so happy that a $15 part fixed my $200 mixer. :) 

I ordered the armature and field-asm cause I did a test on the armature by connecting it directly to the power line and did not have any movement. Upon changing the armature and assembling the brushes, I realized one of the brushes was getting held up. I opened up the edges of the brush holder and that did it. I knew nothing seemed wrong with the parts I took out so I concluded that was the problem because I had just bought it, used it only twice and it stopped working. 

This was a big job as you are basically taking the mixer down to its bones. Thankfully, the you tube video was extremely helpful and the project went smoothly. Just make sure to have food-grade grease on hand before you start. I tore the entire mixer down and re-greased the planetary gears up front as well as replaced the motor assembly. This mixer was handed down to us by my mom, it is probably 25+ years old, but runs like new now. 

Replaced winding and armature 

Replaced armature, Motor Field Assy, and Speed Control Plate. I recommend using some kind of thread locker for all the fasteners so they don't come loose again. I was amazed it turned on first time!! I also ensured the mixer speed was adjusted for the lowest speed (60 rpm) and the speed on #6 (180 rpm). I used a camera and then viewed the video clip in slow motion to get an accurate rpm count. Thank you for your video instructions! 

Troubleshooting suggested the Armature, talk about the hardest part to get to, (it was a little concerning - a lot of steps). Your step-by-step videos were exact. Especially putting everything back together. We also cleaned/replaced all the old grease, Motor brushes, and the Speed Control plate. (just to be sure) Ours is the K5SS model, so it's old. My KitchenAid standing mixer motor stopped working. Our electrical engineer son took it apart and found the motor had burned out. He ordered a new motor from AppliancePartsPros.com and found instructions on YouTube and replaced it and it works like new. 

Thanks to the excellent videos along with my experience as an aircraft component mechanic, I was able to replace the a number of major parts, including the armature, field assembly, brushes and 3 gears. Took my time, got it back together and set the motor speed on the first try. I'm very happy, because now my wife is very happy too. She's had that mixer for over 30 years, and now it runs like new. Checked all terminals for powder, and found out the “common brush’ to rotor was not looping the power to the circuit. Removed the rotor and found that the “common side “ of the “Field Assembly” was burnt up. I replaced the “Field Assembly” and the Mixer works perfectly. Slightly adjusted the speed control. John
