How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985113 / W10820048 Suspension Rod Kit

Washer was like a tank rolling down the street. ...was about to throw it out, then I read the blogs. I changed all four suspensions and now it's like new again. ...thanks appliance parts pros. 

Ordered suspension rods. My brother and husband had the rods replaced within 1/2 hour! Washer works normal again!!!! 

First I tried to level the washer using about a half tub of water and the holes in the side of the tub as a reference level line. After that the machine still would error for an unbalanced load on EVERY load. It would sound like someone had a hammer and was trying to break out from inside the machine when it went into a spin cycle. I did notice that when the tub was half full of water that there was no bounce in the tub from the suspension rods/springs, it was almost touching the floor. I assumed the springs were worn so I ordered this kit. When the new springs/rods arrived I compared the spring tension between the old and new and couldn't tell any difference. I guess I couldn't compress them enough by hand because the new springs/rods fixed the problem! This new greaseless design with the bushing cups is a great improvement over the original design I replaced, the machine is running like new. 

I read online that this particular type of clothes washer has 4 springs to keep the basin in balance during the spin cycle. If one of the springs becomes worn, the washer will tend to become noisy and shake violently during the fastest part of the spin cycle. I ordered 4 sets of spring assemblies (including the rod and other components), because it is recommended to replace all four springs at the same time. I was able to replace the parts myself, which saved me a few hundred dollars instead of hiring a professional. The job took about 15 minutes. It doesn't require advanced training. Just watch a video on Youtube to find out how to do this easy repair. The parts arrived in about a week. During the week I waited, I did not use the washing machine. 

Replaced all four suspension rods (came as a set). Fixed problem 100%. Replacement was easy, opened lid by using a putty knife to push in on the left and right latches. Pulled up and un-hooked the old rods. I needed an extra hand holding the basin up while I hooked the new rods in place. 

Ordered the suspension rod kit, watched the video and me and my husband replaced the rods in no time. The washer is working normally. $60 bucks and a little time kept us from buying a new washer.

I replaced the suspension springs. The repair went well. My arm did not fit in between the tub and the frame as well as the repair video (and I don't have a lot of muscle!) so I had trouble grasping and pulling the rod in order to disengage it during removal and especially when trying to hold it to re-engage it during installation of the new rod. I used a screwdriver during the removal to slide into the hook and pull from above the washer. This was much easier for me. The screwdriver wouldn't work during installation of the new rod, so I used a string loop that I passed through the hole and slid onto the hook then pulled the hook up through the hole and was able to engage the bushing without a problem. Overall repair was pretty easy once I figured this (screwdriver and string) out. It does take some strength to pull the rods during removal and installation. 

I ordered the Suspension Rod Kit listed below from Appliance Parts Pros.com and with the help of the video was able to install myself. Instructions that came with rod kit was not sufficient enough information for using. Read a bit to find causes. Came across the AppliancePartsPros website and saw the video on how to replace suspension rods and what it would solve. The repair wasn’t difficult so I decided to try for myself and order replacement rods. Took about half-hour, maybe less and the issue is solved. Ran 4 loads right away and had no unbalanced loads. Looked at the old rods and 1 was a little rusted and not like the others, so it was the one causing my problems. Thanks for the helpful step-by-step video AppliancePartsPros.
