How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3953640 / 280187 Washer Drain Pump Assembly

Opened front access panel and saw a pinhole leak in the drain pump. First attempted to purchase from Sears Parts Direct but they were out of stock. Found Appliance Parts Pros on a Google search. Ordered the pump and it was on my doorstep in 48 hours. And I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they also provided a great instructional how to video. With this, it took about 15 minutes to replace the pump. Highly recommend Appliance Parts Pros. 

I first unplugged the washer machine, drained the drain lines, and checked the filter for blockages. I had to plug the machine back in and turned the machine on to determine if the pump was actually working. The pump was making a loud noise, but it was still working somewhat. After I unplugged the machine again, I checked the pump to make sure it was receiving enough power to work properly. After fully determining that the drain pump was the issue, I googled drain pumps for my washing machine. Thankfully, this website was the one that I choose to order my pump. The pump arrived just in time. I switched the pump out and my clothes are so much dryer when I remove them from washer. The drying time has been reduced as well. I am very happy with my purchase and the shipping time. 

Ordered a new drain pump and I stalled it.

It's a very easy part to replace on our Kenmore Elite washer. We just had to remove the bottom panel and the part is front and center. We disconnected the electrical connection, two water hoses, and popped the pump out of it's rubber anchors. Putting the new one is was just as simple as removing the old one. 

Replaced with new pump. 

Replaced the drain pump. My biggest challenge was getting the Hose clamp back on the new pump where the water enters it. The smaller clamp was not a problem and everything else went smooth. 

Replaced the drain pump assembly. 

The service manual is located inside the appliance, accessible by removing the back panel. Followed the steps for running the diagnostic program. Found that water pump was not working. Entered the model number on website, found the part and ordered it. Watched the repair video. Received the part in the timeframe that was promised. Installed the part. Happy wife! 

A quick consultation solved it. If my maintenance had not solved the codes, then your agent told me I likely needed a new pump. Bought this machine in 2003, so it lasted pretty well! One review of your video (I had already disassembled the machine to this level, based on a YouTube video) for pump replacement and the rest was a snap. The machine works like new for under $200. Most of the time spent was in locating my appropriate "torx" screwdriver for the facing screws and the right set of pliers to reach the hose clamp. The actual repair was less than 30-min.
