Thomas for Model Number GFE26GGKBWW

Having multiple issues with the refrigerator. Believe the fan in the refrigerator portion has failed, as the drain was caked in ice. This is not the first time we've had to do this, we did it several months ago, and at that time both of the drains were caked in ice. This time we only had to clear out the one in the refrigerator. We are not sure the fan is actually working as the refrigerator is now not cooling down. Top shelf is about 54 degrees, the meat tray is about 40, and the refrigerator is set at 38, and it's been close to 24 hours now. The freezer is set to zero, and an infrared thermometer on some items in the freezer show they are at 10 degrees. We are not sure if this other problem is related. It always seems to take a long time to make ice. Now the problem is that there is ice in the icemaker, but it won't dispense. Is this related to possibly the fan not working?

1 Answer

Thomas, The fan not running will not cause the icemaker to not dispense unless the ice is clumping together. You will want to clear the ice in the refrigerator compartment and then go to the back of the unit and ensure that the drains are cleaned out. Once the ice is clear recheck everything to make sure that the fans are running.

Ryan, You need power, water, and freezing temp to make. Temp comes from a fan in the freezer section sending air to the ice maker area. Needs to be around zero. Power is coming from the main control board. 120 VAC. And with replacing all the water valves that shouldn't be an issue. So it would likely be a temp or power issue. Temp would be the easiest to determine.

Ed, The water valve has multiple solenoids which would be separate for ice and water. You will want to test to see if the icemaker solenoid is getting 120 Vac when the icemaker cycles. If there is then this will be a faulty icemaker assembly.

Brandon for Model Number GFE28HMKEES

Hi there, I'm having an issue where my ice maker appears to be overfilling or leaking during the fill process, causing ice buildup around the bin. We're still getting plenty of ice, and they appear normal size, but every couple of weeks we have to break out big ice chunks that are preventing the mechanism from spinning to dispense the ice. We also have had the ice bin get stuck in the door due to the ice buildup. Do you think this is a symptom of a bad ice maker or something else? Thanks!

1 Answer

Hello Brandon, as a general rule with this type of problem the water valve WR57X10098 gets replaced first, (its located in the ice maker area in the door, not the one on the rear bottom of the cabinet) if the problem still occurs the ice maker [WR30X10164] gets replaced also.

Jacob, The only thing that would allow the icemaker to cycle would be the thermostat located inside the icemaker and the main control board on the unit. This sounds like the main control board would be the issue.

Wayne, it would be recommended that the fill tube going into the ice maker is inspected for an ice block as this can indicate a leaking valve. If there is an ice block, it would need to be cleared and the valve replaced. If there is not an ice block, the next step would be to identify if the temperature is less than 10°F as the ice maker would not be able to efficiently or properly produce ice at a higher temperature. This can be done using a thermometer and letting the door stay closed for 5 minutes. If these things check out to be good, the next step would be identifying if the icemaker is getting proper voltage when the door switch is taped in the closed position.
