Customer Questions and Answers for Ptc Start Relay & Overload Protector Assembly (Compressor) by Ge

Part Number: OEM12901878
Manufacturer Part Number: WR07X10097

This PTC start relay and overload protector assembly mounts on the compressor. It manages compressor start-up and cuts power if overheating occurs. Replacing a failed start device may restore normal cooling and stop repeated clicking from the compressor area.

  • Controls compressor start-up through a PTC start device that disengages after the motor is running
  • Overload protector interrupts power if current draw or temperature is excessive to protect the compressor
  • Visual clues of failure can include heat damage or a burnt odor around the start device
What's included: One PTC start relay and one overload protector assembled together. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and allow the compressor to cool before servicing
  • Note wire positions; transfer wires and install the assembly on the compressor pins in the same orientation
  • Ensure terminals are fully seated; do not force if fitment differs from the original
  • If present, reconnect any external run capacitor exactly as originally routed

Hand, The ptc and overload that you received WR07X10097 is not a direct replacement for this unit but may work. It does not require a capacitor for the unit.

Hello, My 10 year old Lg French door fridge is making a clicking noise every couple of minutes followed by a second click 30 seconds later. Cooling I have cleaned out the condenser coils etc in the back. When the fridge is pulled out the freezer and fridge compartments are kept at their set temp but as soon as the fridge is moved back into its normal space between to sets of cupboards both fridge/freezer won't stay cool. Is this a relay/capacitor issue or the compressor being shot? I have contacted Lg but they don't carry parts for my model any longer!

1 Answer

Bradley, you need to replace the start relay, part number 6749C-0014E, when you take the relay off, if it rattles it is bad. If the compressor will ot start after you replace the relay, you may have a bad compressor.

My refrigerator will not stabilize temperature on the low side. I shoot for 37F refrigerator and 5F freezer. It can stabilize at 32 in the refrigerator but when I try to lower the temp it falls off completely and does not cool. Sometimes if I disconnect the plug it will start up again. I replaced the control board and it is a somewhat better but not functioning normally. I do hear a hum before the compressor comes on. Is this normal? What other parts could I try to replace? The capacitor, the relay, vacuum clean the refrig tubes? Refrigerator is GDSC0KCXCRWW SCErial number is MT308651

1 Answer

Andrew, If the unit is operating properly when set to 32 degrees but not at 37 degrees then this would most likely either be a thermistor issue or a bad main control board. When replacing the main control board, if there is an instruction sheet you will want to make sure that you do what the instructions state.

Hello Saul, You should check the frost pattern on the evaporator coils behind the back freezer wall. This sounds like you may have a sealed system issue.

I received a start relay, capacitor and overload protector for my LG refrigerator LFC23760SB and they did not match what my fridge has. I called in and Kaitlyn assisted but said those were the only parts listed for my LG model. I found part AP4300623 is an exact match to what I have and part AP4591436 matches the capacitor I have. I will call in to see about returning my parts and ordering these but before I do can you answer the following questions. Is there a start relay that goes with the AP4300623 unit and can you provide me with the part number? BTW my symptom is that I hear 2 or 3 spaced out clicks before the compressor kicks in on the unit. Temps seem OK and coils are clean but I thought the start relay and other parts may take care of the issue before something bad happens. Thanks, Bob

1 Answer

Bob, The PTC And Overload WR07X10097 which is the overload and relay assembly and there would not be a additional relay for the unit.

Hello Troy. You will need to test and see where your losing power at for the unit. You will use a meter to test and see where the power loss is at.

Fridge had been hot at sides for a while. Finally temperature in freezer and fridge became erratic and then wouldn't cool. Fridge was very dusty around condenser fan and condenser. Condenser fan was very slow. Ptc + olp assembly was cracked. Capacitor measured fine on ohm setting but do not have capacitance setting. Ordered and replaced main control board, ptc+olp and condenser fan and cleaned dust from condensor and fan blades. The new ptc+olp I received rattled when shook and did not read 10-100 ohms across any of the pairs of contacts. Based on a youtube video this was evidence of a faulty relay. Should I see 10-100 ohms between two of the 3 contacts on the ptc+olp assembly ( with/without capacitor)? Despite suspecting a bad new part I replaced along with fan and main control board. Fridge ran fine and got down to correct temperature overnight. Next day fridge is back to higher than normal temperature and compressor is quite hot and not always running despite not reaching set temperature.

Hello Yorisimo. It sounds like the compressor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Had clicking and compressor not starting replaced the original relay and overload with wr07x10097. Worked for 3 days freeezer and fridge at correct temps then realized freezer started to ice up (never had happened) and fridge started heating up and compressor was hot to the touch. When I rechecked install of wr07x10097 realized I had not connected the ground wire back to the overload housing. Just reconnected it and am letting everything de-ice. Could this failing to have grounded the capacitor/overload have cause the malfunctions just described?

1 Answer

Johnrue, No the ground wire not being attached would not cause the coils for the evaporator to ice up. You will want to check the defrost limiter and defrost thermostat for continuity. If they have continuity then test the defrost sensor for resistance. If they do not have continuity then the part would need replaced. If you need to test the sensor the resistance readings should be as follows, at 77 degrees resistance 5K ohms, 37 degrees resistance 14.4K ohms and at 0 degrees resistance 42.2K ohms. If outside of these readings then the sensor is bad and if this checks ok then the control board would be the issue.
