Causes of a bad suspension rod & spring assembly can include wear and tear from regular use, excessive loads that strain the components, or damage from impact or mishandling.

Symptoms of a bad suspension rod & spring assembly include:

  • Excessive shaking or vibrating during the wash cycle
  • Loud banging or thumping noises
  • The washer tub being off-balance or tilted
  • The washer moving or "walking"

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

I am looking to replace the suspension rods on my washer and have been reading all your responses to questions asked by customers. One response suggests green rods in the rear and black rods in the front. My washer is assembled with the green in the front and black in the rear. Is this a manufacturer error? Also, the model number tag is missing from my washer so the model number listed here is based on photos of the unit from the internet, WWSE5240GWW

Hello Don, The green ones are used in the rear and the black are used in the front. There are different tension springs used because of the weight of the motor hanging from the front of the tub assembly.

David for Model Number WCSR4170GWW

I have a GE Super Capacity Plus clothes washer, Model # WCSR4170GWW. It is making a screeching noise while it runs. The gap between the top of the tub and the top of the washer has increased over time, and when I remove the front panel and look at a loaded washer, the bottom of the tub is scraping against the bottom frame of the washer. The tub looks level, but it's just riding WAY too low. As far as I can tell, all of the suspension rod assemblies are intact. I understand that a suspension rod assembly can wear out over time, but wouldn't it be unusual for them to all go at the same time? How do I know if I need to replace some or all of the suspension rods, or if it could be some other problem?

Hello David, You will want to check the apron on your unit to see if it is bent. If it is you will want to get the apron kit WH49X20925 for white and WH49X20925 for bisque. It is also possible for the suspension rods to wear out but check this first.

Bill F for Model Number WMSE3140AWW

Having a problem with the final spin. With clothes in the tub the tub quickly becomes unballanced and stops. When the tub is empty it will complete the cycle. The rubber straps on each corenr appear to be fine and the suppension rods are all in place. Is there a counter balalnce spring somewhere? I do not see one. Could the supension rods just be worn out? This machine has been used - meaning we have really loaded this thing up in the past - that is why I suspect the suppension rods have worn out. Thank you

Hello Bill, While it is a possibility that the suspension rods could be bad, you would want to look at the corners where the rods are located and see if any of the corners look bent or out of shape. If this is the case then you would need to get the weld assembly rod support WH46X10270.

Hello Paul, It sounds like you have a loose or broken wire in the wire harness that when you push the tub back to the corner it makes contact. Check your wiring.

Hello Don. If the rod WH16X544 was all that broke, then you should be fine replacing it. If you need the socket support, you will need to order WH01X10001. Hope this helps.

Hi Fred. The top tub corner's and the top frame corners have black rubber 6" strips that hold the corners in relation to one another. Kit part # is WH49X10024. Make sure the suspension rods are inset correctly in the top of the frame and the bottom of the tub as shown in the installation instructions. Thank You.
