Dave February 20, 2023 for Model Number 110.24862300 My washer makes a thumping noise for a brief time when it slows down or stops. My research led me to buy a clutch kit and start there however I'm wondering if the brake pads are the problem. Is there a way to tell? I saw the brake shoes you list as part # 285438 but when I enter my model # to check for compatibility it says it is not compatible with my model. Please point me to the correct part. Thank you.
1 Answer Dave, the basket drive W10820043 could potentially be worn out at the top where there are two "ears" that are used to secure the drive block WP389140 when spinning. If these two ears are worn out, it can cause a thump as the drive block skips over and the basket drive would need to be replaced in this case. Read More...
Kennyc October 29, 2020 for Model Number whirlpool topload you just answered my first question thanks so much #2 i removed motor and gearcase & motor loud sound is still there. possibly a gearcase problem. should the spindle turn fast in spin cycle.i can turn it with my hand while running.
1 Answer Kennyc, yes the spindle(spin tube) will "turn fast in the spin cycle" once the clutch is engaged and the brake shoe(s) release. If you reverse the direction the agitator shaft will oscillate back and forth. A better idea of the type of noise and the location of the noise would be more helpful. Read More...
Kenny C October 29, 2020 for Model Number whirlpool topload i just replaced clutch assembly motorcoupler and bushing cam wite piece machina agitates drains fine but will not spin loud sound like trying to turn but very minute turning any suggestions?
1 Answer Hello Kenny, in spin mode, the motor reverses and powers the gearcase in reverse, the clutch spins the basket up to speed and also releases the brake band to allow spin, that would be the area to check. Read More...

Jo January 07, 2017 for Model Number LA7780XSW1 I just replaced the drain pump, motor coupler and clutch on my washer and it now spins great. The only problem is that when i open the lid during the spin cycle, I can hear the motor stop but the agitator continues to spin as well as the basket. They both spin until they finally decide to stop or i stop it with my hand. Why is the basket spinning freely ? Shouldn't they both stop once the lid is opened? I have also inspected the spanner nut and drive block and they look fine. Did it have anything to do with the replacement of the clutch? Please help me, so puzzled!!!
1 Answer Jo, You will want to make sure that the clutch is in properly but this issue will be more likely caused by a faulty brake assembly on the unit. Read More...

Harold August 20, 2016 for Model Number Whirlpool washer Model # LA5800xswo Brake shoe replacement: the new brake shoes fit in the machine, BUT the lining begins and ends approximately 1/4" further back on the new one compared to the original. What effect will this have? Is this the correct part? Suggestions? Thank you.
1 Answer Harold, The 1/4 inch difference in the lining length will have no effect on the operation of the brake or the machine. Yes, you have the correct part number 285438 / 285438 Brake Shoe(s), there is only one part number for all Whirlpool manufactured "direct drive" washers. Make sure you apply a small dab of grease to the rollers so they move freely and don't seize up, and you'll be fine. Thanks Read More...
