Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Brake Shoe (Part Number: OEM9283305)

Dave, the basket drive W10820043 could potentially be worn out at the top where there are two "ears" that are used to secure the drive block WP389140 when spinning. If these two ears are worn out, it can cause a thump as the drive block skips over and the basket drive would need to be replaced in this case.

Kennyc, yes the spindle(spin tube) will "turn fast in the spin cycle" once the clutch is engaged and the brake shoe(s) release. If you reverse the direction the agitator shaft will oscillate back and forth. A better idea of the type of noise and the location of the noise would be more helpful.

Hello Kenny, in spin mode, the motor reverses and powers the gearcase in reverse, the clutch spins the basket up to speed and also releases the brake band to allow spin, that would be the area to check.

Stacy, The brake would be the most likely cause for this and replacing the shoe would be the best option for this issue.

Jo for Model Number LA7780XSW1

I just replaced the drain pump, motor coupler and clutch on my washer and it now spins great. The only problem is that when i open the lid during the spin cycle, I can hear the motor stop but the agitator continues to spin as well as the basket. They both spin until they finally decide to stop or i stop it with my hand. Why is the basket spinning freely ? Shouldn't they both stop once the lid is opened? I have also inspected the spanner nut and drive block and they look fine. Did it have anything to do with the replacement of the clutch? Please help me, so puzzled!!!

Jo, You will want to make sure that the clutch is in properly but this issue will be more likely caused by a faulty brake assembly on the unit.

Harold, The 1/4 inch difference in the lining length will have no effect on the operation of the brake or the machine. Yes, you have the correct part number 285438 / 285438 Brake Shoe(s), there is only one part number for all Whirlpool manufactured "direct drive" washers. Make sure you apply a small dab of grease to the rollers so they move freely and don't seize up, and you'll be fine. Thanks

Doug, The most common cause for a unit of this design to not spin would be a clutch issue.
