Cyrus K for Model Number Kenmore 110.28522701

All parts of operation seem fine--good agitate, good spin. BUT: At the beginning of spin it makes one God-Awful bang then comes up to speed alright. At the end of spin cycle there's a different huge bang. Drum stops with such a jolt that it turns the entire machine on its feet--about an inch clockwise at each foot. I replaced the clutch and the brake release cam, but, came to feel while in there that neither of those was the needed fix. While there, tried squeezing the spring seats of the brake shoes together with a channel-lock just to see about how strong the spring is. The seats just twisted slightly saying time to stop. So, the spring seems plenty tough alright, OR is it possible for the shoes to stick/seize on the drum so that braking is much too abrupt? On that scenario, starting the next spin cycle would require braking the shoes away from the drum again causing the startup bang! One more piece: After the usual violent stop, when I try to turn the drum against the brake using pins in the vent holes, the brake is strong enough to turn the entire machine on the floor. Sure ready for good ideas!! Thanks in advance!

Cyrus, This issue does sound like it would be the brake shoes to grab to rapidly and cause the abrupt stopping. You will want to check the brake to make sure that the brake is good.

Joe, The possibilities are endless, It could be a low voltage problem, a small article stuck between the tubs or an even smaller object stuck in the pump. A seized drain pump or a short in the timer circuits causing the motor to overheat, trying to run in both directions at the same time. You should probably start at the drain pump WP3363892 and work your way through the gearcase and then the other possibilities.

Hello M.D., You will need to remove the cabinet and drop the transmission to inspect the brake W10820043 and clutch 285785 assemblies. One or both of these can be at fault.

My washer will not stop spinning. The washing cycle takes the same amount of time as usual but won't stop spinning until slowed manually or after a while it will eventually slow and come to a stop. I can hear the motor engage and click between cycles, as normal, agitation works, it fills properly, it spins at the normal speed (I believe) just won't stop. I can hear the motor switch off when he timer reaches the end but the basket spins till it loses momentum. Would new Brake Shoes help with this Problem?

Johnny, With the motor shutting down but the tub still spinning would indicate that the brake is not engaging when it stops. This could be the shoes causing the issue or the brake itself sticking causing the issue.

Washer won't spin. Kenmore 80 series model # 11023812100 Washer won't spin for either rinse cycle or spin cycle. If you hear it enter either the rinse or spin cycle the motor strains and it will not spin until you turn the power off and then back on with either the lid switch or timer switch. I inspected the coupler, replaced the transmission, replaced the clutch (includes brake cam) and most recently removed the lid switch and replaced with a jumper for troubleshooting. With the lid switch removed I have been able to observe several cycles (same symptoms in Ultra clean or Permanent press modes). When it is in a spin cycle (and not spinning) if you turn off the power you see the tub move just a bit as if the brake was released. Is the brake engagement completely mechanical? Is the brake possible sticking? When I replaced the transmission there was a good bit of oil splattered around and coffee ground looking particles on the top side of the transmission. What should I trouble shoot next? Brake, timer switch, motor or other electrical component??? Please help?

Hello Brad. Motor has to change direction. Sounds like the timer is sticking on the contact and jamming the motor. Check and see and if so, replace the timer.

Russ, The agitator dogs 80040 have nothing to do with the spinning of the tub. The dogs lock and unlock during the agitation cycle, in order to allow the clothes mover (auger) to move the clothes. The brake shoes perform two functions, in agitate they engage the band and hold the spin basket still while the agitator oscillates. When the washer spins, the brake shoes retract, the clutch engages the clutch band and the tub spins or ramps up to full spin speed in approximately 90 seconds. You didn't mention any rumbling, squealing,or squawking noises, that may indicate a bearing issue. So that pretty much leaves the clutch slipping or the brake shoes not disengaging totally. The brakes are spring loaded, and also have rollers, if the springs are weak, or the rollers dirty or sticky, they can get stuck and drag against the band and slow down the spin speed.
