Cyrus K May 03, 2016 for Model Number Kenmore 110.28522701 All parts of operation seem fine--good agitate, good spin. BUT: At the beginning of spin it makes one God-Awful bang then comes up to speed alright. At the end of spin cycle there's a different huge bang. Drum stops with such a jolt that it turns the entire machine on its feet--about an inch clockwise at each foot. I replaced the clutch and the brake release cam, but, came to feel while in there that neither of those was the needed fix. While there, tried squeezing the spring seats of the brake shoes together with a channel-lock just to see about how strong the spring is. The seats just twisted slightly saying time to stop. So, the spring seems plenty tough alright, OR is it possible for the shoes to stick/seize on the drum so that braking is much too abrupt? On that scenario, starting the next spin cycle would require braking the shoes away from the drum again causing the startup bang! One more piece: After the usual violent stop, when I try to turn the drum against the brake using pins in the vent holes, the brake is strong enough to turn the entire machine on the floor. Sure ready for good ideas!! Thanks in advance!
1 Answer Cyrus, This issue does sound like it would be the brake shoes to grab to rapidly and cause the abrupt stopping. You will want to check the brake to make sure that the brake is good. Read More...
Joe June 12, 2015 for Model Number KAWS677EQ0 Hello and Thanks for taking my ? I had done several large loads and the last was small. Started to fill a small load, went out to the garage, came back in to a room full of smoke. No previous noises or problems. Motor is probably toast :( What would effect a motor, for it to burn out?
1 Answer Joe, The possibilities are endless, It could be a low voltage problem, a small article stuck between the tubs or an even smaller object stuck in the pump. A seized drain pump or a short in the timer circuits causing the motor to overheat, trying to run in both directions at the same time. You should probably start at the drain pump WP3363892 and work your way through the gearcase and then the other possibilities. Read More...
M.D. November 29, 2014 for Model Number WTW5300VW2 Whirlpool Washing Machine My machine works and spins on all cycles, but when it needs to stop, a loud bang is heard when the brakes go on, sometimes moving the entire machine. This can happen a few times during a cycle. I have noticed on occasion that clothes will sometimes be soggy after a full wash. I have already changed the counterbalance spring and the drive block.
1 Answer Hello M.D., You will need to remove the cabinet and drop the transmission to inspect the brake W10820043 and clutch 285785 assemblies. One or both of these can be at fault. Read More...
Adam B October 21, 2014 for Model Number Whirlpool Ultimate Care II Clothes are left wet in tube and slightly smells like smoke. I replaced motor coupling and clutch but the tube still doesn't spin and there is a smokey odor. Any suggestions?
Johnny October 13, 2014 for Model Number WTW5200SQ0 My washer will not stop spinning. The washing cycle takes the same amount of time as usual but won't stop spinning until slowed manually or after a while it will eventually slow and come to a stop. I can hear the motor engage and click between cycles, as normal, agitation works, it fills properly, it spins at the normal speed (I believe) just won't stop. I can hear the motor switch off when he timer reaches the end but the basket spins till it loses momentum. Would new Brake Shoes help with this Problem?
1 Answer Johnny, With the motor shutting down but the tub still spinning would indicate that the brake is not engaging when it stops. This could be the shoes causing the issue or the brake itself sticking causing the issue. Read More...
Jim S. November 08, 2013 for Model Number LSQ9659LW1 Whirlpool Hi, The washer's having a problem at the end of the spin cycle. The brake is not applying much pressure so the basket slows down very slowly and makes a banging sound. The frequency of the sound slows as the basket rotation slows. The noise is louder with larger, or out of balance loads. Opening the lid does not make the basket stop any faster. Appreciate the help!
1 Answer Hello Jim, This sounds like the basket drive and brake assembly W10820043 has experienced a failure. Read More...
Brad November 08, 2013 for Model Number 11023812100 Washer won't spin. Kenmore 80 series model # 11023812100 Washer won't spin for either rinse cycle or spin cycle. If you hear it enter either the rinse or spin cycle the motor strains and it will not spin until you turn the power off and then back on with either the lid switch or timer switch. I inspected the coupler, replaced the transmission, replaced the clutch (includes brake cam) and most recently removed the lid switch and replaced with a jumper for troubleshooting. With the lid switch removed I have been able to observe several cycles (same symptoms in Ultra clean or Permanent press modes). When it is in a spin cycle (and not spinning) if you turn off the power you see the tub move just a bit as if the brake was released. Is the brake engagement completely mechanical? Is the brake possible sticking? When I replaced the transmission there was a good bit of oil splattered around and coffee ground looking particles on the top side of the transmission. What should I trouble shoot next? Brake, timer switch, motor or other electrical component??? Please help?
1 Answer Hello Brad. Motor has to change direction. Sounds like the timer is sticking on the contact and jamming the motor. Check and see and if so, replace the timer. Read More...

Joe October 16, 2013 for Model Number rax4232pqo Spins once in a while. I have replaced clutch and I have bypassed lid switch. I noticed brake shoes are greasy. When it spins it spins great. Thanks Joe
1 Answer Hello Joe. It sounds like the drive tube W10820043 may be bad and need to be replaced on the unit. Check and make sure the drive block is not stripped out and if it is good, replace the drive tube. Read More...
Russ September 30, 2013 for Model Number 110 23812 100 kenmore series 80 I have replaced the motor , coupler and the clutch assembly , and as the washer does final spin it doesnt complete the spin out 100 %. As the clothes are not spun tight to the tub wall. I rotate the dial to spin and it then spins out as it should. You had replied that it might be the brake shoes and not the timer swich. Anything to do with the agitator dogs ? Please give me your thoughts.
1 Answer Russ, The agitator dogs 80040 have nothing to do with the spinning of the tub. The dogs lock and unlock during the agitation cycle, in order to allow the clothes mover (auger) to move the clothes. The brake shoes perform two functions, in agitate they engage the band and hold the spin basket still while the agitator oscillates. When the washer spins, the brake shoes retract, the clutch engages the clutch band and the tub spins or ramps up to full spin speed in approximately 90 seconds. You didn't mention any rumbling, squealing,or squawking noises, that may indicate a bearing issue. So that pretty much leaves the clutch slipping or the brake shoes not disengaging totally. The brakes are spring loaded, and also have rollers, if the springs are weak, or the rollers dirty or sticky, they can get stuck and drag against the band and slow down the spin speed. Read More...
