For Whirlpool Freezer Control Assembly (Electronic Control Board) (Part Number: OEM12742338)

Ray for Model Number SBI20MW

It seems that my freezer/refrigerator only works intermittently. When I tap the freezer/ refrigerator temperature Control panel in the refrigerator section of the unit, it starts working again for awhile then stops before things really freeze up in the freezer and the temp is still not optimal in the refrigerator section. If I tap the control panel again it then turns on again. I assume something is wrong with the thermostat in the control panel. Will getting this part fix this problem?

1 Answer

C. Norris, The 2 parts that you are referencing are completely different parts. The R0161050 is a damper control that goes in the refrigerator section and the R0161092 is the freezer control.

Max for Model Number SQD26VW

I have an Amana side-by-side, model number SQD26VW. The fridge side was not getting cold and the freezer side was not freezing. The fan and compressor are both running. I called a repair man. He came out. He took the inside panel off from inside the freezer and there was alot of frost and ice on the top half of the coil. He thought the defrost fan was bad. He checked the voltage of the 2 wires going to the fan and he said neither wire had 120 volts. He called the manufacture troubleshooting line and they suggested the cold control might be bad. He then looked up getting a new cold control and said this item was discontinued. 1) From the details I provided, does it sound like the cold control is bad and needs to be changed? 2) Exactly which part number is the cold control? If the part is available, I want to order the correct part.

1 Answer

Max, If the unit's compressor and the fans are running then this will be a sealed system issue and would need to be repaired by a qualified Refrigeration technician. The fans will not operate and the compressor will not operate if the cold control is defective. The fact that there was frost on the top half of the evaporator coils but nothing on the bottom would also indicate a sealed system issue. The cold control for this unit is part number R0161092. Now there is a possibility that the defrost thermostat could be faulty and would cause the evaporator fan to not run which could cause the same type of issue with the frost pattern. The defrost thermostat would be part number R0161088.

Sandu, Unfortunately, with the thermostat having been discontinued by the manufacturer there would be no suitable replacement available.

Hugh, You can hook the wires up to either of the 2 terminals that are on the thermostat as it is just passing voltage from one side to the other.

Jed444 for Model Number Amana SBI20K

I have a 30 year old side by side Amana, model SBI20K. Freezer cools fine. Freezer temp is 0 degrees, with rotary temp dial at 4 out of 7. Refrigerator is 40 degrees at the maximum setting (7 out of 7). At the moment, the fridge 25% full. My concern is that if the temp doesn't stay stable, and gets warmer, I can't dial the temp cooler, since I am at the coolest setting now. There is cold air coming out of half of the vent (about 5") in the rear upper left side of the fridge, on the side where the fridge termperature control dial is. I opened up the panel covering the evaporator coils, and there is no frost on them. Any ideas? Thanks!

1 Answer

Jed, This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty control damper which would be part number R9900109 with the freezer temp being ok and the refrigerator side being warmer than normal.

Dean, You will want to check to make sure that the defrost control is coming out of defrost. If this checks ok then the freezer control will most likely be the issue.

Ernie, With the unit not freezing and the temp starting to rise in the refrigerator you will want to check the evaporator coil to see if there is a good frost pattern. If there is just a little frost on the coils then this issue will be a sealed system issue in which you will need to have a servicer to check the unit.

Samuel, If the temperature in the refrigerator is at 38 degrees and the freeze between -5 and 5 degrees then the unit is operating properly but would suggest checking the condenser coils to make sure that they are clean.
