The Dryer Drive Motor is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This motor is responsible for turning the drum and the blower wheel, which allows for effective drying and air circulation within the dryer.

Over time, the drive motor can wear out or fail due to mechanical stress, electrical issues, or general wear from regular use. Causes of a bad drive motor include motor burnout, worn bearings, or issues with the electrical connections.

Symptoms of a bad dryer drive motor include:

  • The dryer drum not spinning
  • The dryer making unusual noises such as humming, buzzing, or grinding
  • The dryer starting but then stopping shortly after
  • A burning smell coming from the dryer

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Dryer Drive Motor (Part Number: OEM9282708)

Jim for Model Number 110.85862401

How can I be sure that the motor is bad? I've done the resistance measurements and they are a little low, (2 ohms rather than 2.3-3.6), but I expected them to be high if the motor had failed. I measured the resistance from P1-3 to P1-4 at 2.1 ohms, which makes sense to me given the wiring diagram. However, the tech sheet states that if the resistance is in the range of 1 to 6 ohms, "replace the machine control electronics." Should I replace the motor or the control board? If I have to replace both I'll just buy a new dryer! Thanks, Jim

Hello Jim, In light of the statement, " if the resistance is in the range of 1 to 6 ohms, replace the machine control", I would replace the electronic control 280087. The tech. sheet will be right 98% of the time.

Hello Judee, You have a bad winding in the motor 279787. This will cause it not to start and it will make it run hot if you help it. The overload on the side of the motor will kick off and turn the motor off when enough temperature is accumulated. It would be a good idea to check for exhaust duct restrictions as excessive heat being held in the unit will cause premature electronic component failure. This would explain the thermal fuse failure and the motor failure. If the issue is not addressed, you will continue having dryer problems........even if you get a different dryer!

Ted for Model Number Kenmore Dryer Model 11066932690,

I need to replace my Drive Motor (Part number shown on the motor is 3395654, Specification is 1/3 hp 115/60 5.9 Amp Thermal Protected CLB. Your parts help desk told me to use the compatible motor part # AP 3094233. When I look at it, there is a difference on how the wire comes out of the Motor to the mounted terminal. My motor has three wires comming out of the Motor. Two is connected to the Drive Motor Sw terminal that is mounted on the motor. The third wire is connected to a Thermal Fuse (a separate unit from the Drive Motor SW that is mounted under the Drive Motor Sw). The other end of the Thermal Fuse is connected to the Belt cut off Sw. The Thermal Fuse description is a 1.25" x 1", .25" thick black casing with two terminals sticking out. the description on it is 9919 T-O-D 20MCD3GA 028. Your motor has only two wires coming out of the Motor and connected to the terminal on the Drive Motor SW (that is mounted on the Motor).Does your Motor have a Thermal Fuse protecting the Motor circuit? How do I coonect the Thermal Fuse to the new motor if I were to buy the new one?

Hi John. Your unit can overheat under 2- conditions normally. Look at the back of the dryer's vent without pulling it out(in the natural position). If the vent is kinked and plastic you are backing up heat and moisture into the cabinet area. Look at the whole length and clean your outside vent/hood to operate properly. You really need the cycling thermostat part # or the thermistor part # WP8577274 that operates the on /off temperature swings. It will stick and get out of range overheating the cabinet and prematurely wearing out parts. use the supplied tech. sheet to activate the diagnostic mode. This will find any fault codes and then you will be able to tell which circuit has the issue. The motor is part # 279787. Thank You.

David for Model Number 11082822101

My wife went to dry a load. First load of day, loaded laundry in, pushed start and display lights up and the unit would buzz like the motor was trying to engage. No error codes or anything. I emptied the clothes out, held the 'door trigger' and pushed start. I could hear the buzz again. Gave the drum a 'nudge' and it started to rotate. After releasing the 'door trigger' , I closed the door and pressed start again. Drum wouldn't move, I could feel heat and still heard the buzz. I took the front lower panel off to see if I could see any of the belts slipping and didn't seem to see any. My question is, would this most likely be the internal bearing of the motor? Should a replacement motor be 'the fix' ? Thanks
