Hello Carl, This design does not require a bypass plug so when the filter is removed, the water will dispense, automatically bypassing the filter. The manual is generic so the information in it will not always be correct to the design.

Wayne G. for Model Number PUR 4396841. Water Filter

We have a Kitchen Aid refrigerator we purchased new 7 years ago and we have consistently changed the water filter wit a PUR 4396841 filter. No problems. This time the first large cup of water was gray (like charcoal ?) then the water has been clear since. Is there a problem? Also the box appeared to not have been opened but there was not date stickers to apply and no instruction sheet enclosed. Should we be concerned with the water or filter?

Hello Wayne. You are suppose to run at least 1 gallon of water through the new water filter. To get rid of sediments and air from the system, after that the water should be drinkable and no air present in the system. Thanks!

Hello Harry! The model number you provided does not require you to shut the water off when replacing the water filter. However your water supply source should have a way to shut the water off coming into the unit. Thanks!

Hello Cathy. The used filters can be disposed into your regular garbage. If you are wanting to recycle it, it should have a symbol on it for the correct kind.

Amanda, Yes, you would want to "flush" and purge the system before you use it again. Once you're sure you have water to the fill valve connection, install a new filter. Then using a large slender container, dispense 2 or 3 gallons of water through the dispenser. This should flush any debris in the system out and purge any air in the system so the dispenser won't drip after dispensing water. After six years, you'll want to check and make sure there are no leaks or loose connections in the tubing or connectors, before you move thee refrigerator back into position.

Hello Samantha. You should still be able to press really fast and hard and remove the filter from the housing. The cap does not hold it in place.
