Daniel, With the water filter in the unit or out, the water will still flow. This unit does not have to have a filter in it for the water to work and does not need a bypass. One way to tell if the filter went in properly and is filtering would be once you put the filter in you need to purge the lines. The water will flow immediately but will become a strong flow so make sure that you use a large pitcher that can hold quite a bit. The reason the flow becomes stronger would be that there is air in the lines from installing the new filter. This will cause pressure that is trying to get out so it will push through and the water will stop and air will come out. Make sure that you purge at least 3 gallons of water to clear the air from the lines and any loose particles of the filter that have come free. If you do not get that heavy flow and air come out of the lines then the filter is most likely not in place properly.

MJB, If you're sure you have the correct filter assembly EDR3RXD1 for your model refrigerator, then make sure you're removing the covers and other components before you attempt to install the filter. Here's some help 1. Press the eject button to release the filter from the base grille. 2. Pull the filter straight out. 3. Turn the cap counterclockwise to remove it from the filter. IMPORTANT: Do not discard the cap. It is part of your refrigerator. Keep the cap to use with the replacement filter. 4. Align the ridge on the cap with the arrow on the new filter and turn the cap until it snaps into place. NOTE: You can run the dispenser without a filter. Your water will not be filtered. Simply insert the cap all of the way into the base grille and rotate the cap until it is firmly in place. 5. Remove the protective covers from the O-rings. 6. Push the filter into the base grille. The eject button will pop back out when the filter is fully engaged. 7. Flush the water system." The slightest misalignment can create an issue. If you still have a problem after rechecking everything and the installation of the filter, you will most likely have to replace the filter housing.

Gretchen, a couple of possibilities, the filter isn't installed properly or locked in place. Is the filter correct for the model number you have. If you didn't insert or seat the filter correctly / properly, you may have damaged the bypass system in the filter housing and it will not allow water to flow through the filter or housing.

Joe, There are no water related components on the right front side of your refrigerator, try these checks first. Open the refrigerator, remove the lower crisper bins, and check for water on the floor of the compartment. You may have a loose connector or a hairline crack in the water reservoir, and the water is leaking and running under the door and out the side. Move the refrigerator out, and check the water inlet valve connections and water supply line they may be loose and dripping. You may want to tighten them with a crescent wrench, while you're there looking. As a precaution, remove the compartment cover and recheck the tubes to the filter housing, and the tube up the back to the ice maker.
