The Thermal Fuse is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This safety device protects the dryer from overheating by cutting off power if the dryer exceeds a certain temperature. It is crucial for maintaining safe operation and preventing potential fire hazards. This thermal fuse has 1/4-inch terminals and operates around 243 degrees F.

Causes of a bad thermal fuse include lint buildup causing overheating, blocked ventilation, or a malfunctioning thermostat. These issues can lead to the fuse blowing to prevent further damage or risk.

Symptoms of a bad thermal fuse include:

  • Dryer not starting
  • No heat in the dryer
  • Dryer shutting off mid-cycle
  • The dryer running but not heating

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermal Fuse (Part Number: OEM18022719)

Brian, Have you seen any error codes in the display ? The issue could be an overheating motor WP35001080, due to a lint build up on the motor or worn motor bearings, or possibly a safety thermostat WP35001080 opening , due to an overheat situation, due to a restricted or kinked exhaust vent. We're sending you some information, so you can conduct some tests and diagnostics to help pinpoint the issue. Thanks and Good Luck

Roger for Model Number LSE7804ACE (747G)

Our dryer appears to work fine but doesn't dry clothes unless you run them thru 5-6 60 min. cycles. I opened the front access panel on the dryer and saw the heat element come on; the cycle was 45 sec. on and 180 sec. off. This seems like too long an off cycle. I checked thermostat fuses 3-06604 & 3-07473 and both had continuity (closed ckt.). I did notice that the single terminal located on the outside of the heater coil shroud that connects black wire #33 to the front of the heater coil element would spark internally for 1-3 sec. prior to the heater coil coming on. This terminal had no part #. Could this be the problem? Thanks

Hello Roger. Yes, a loose connection could be the issue, but the first thing to look for is a restricted vent. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Then, I'm having difficulties, If I understand you, Your dryer runs and heats, but makes noise the shuts off, you have to wait for the dryer to cool down , then it will operate again. If thats the case, you most likely need a new dryer motor W10410999 it's overheating and shuts down on the overload. Good Luck and Thanks

Steve for Model Number MDE5500AYW

Our dryer will not turn on. When I press the start button, it starts to kick for a second and then stops, not even a partial revolution of the drum. The display works correctly as far as I can tell. When the door is open, I get the door open reading. All settings seem to work properly, and displays come up normally. It is just when I hit the start button that it shuts down. I suspect it is the thermal fuse, which I believe is part number AP4043259. It looks like it on the base next to the drum. Would there be another part that could also be causing this?

1 Answer

Steve, I would not expect you to have a bad thermal fuse. Were that the case, the motor would not attempt to start, I would have to suspect a voltage drop below 105 VAC when the dryer is started, check the connections at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. A small article stuck inside the blower wheel, causing a jam and not allowing the motor to rotate. or a bad motor WP33002795. Thanks and Good Luck

Hi Lorraine. Did you get the response we sent you yesterday? However, Take out the drum and see if the motor will run with the door switchjumped between Yellow and purple. I have (very rarely) seen a thermal fuse ohm closed but not be able to carry the amount of amperage needed for the motor. The thermal fuse is part # WP307473. The motor has to have 120vac on the blue and white to run, but 240vac between blue and black. The motor is part # W10410997. Thank you.
