Cliff, Yes, a defective element 279838 or open thermal fuse kit 279816 would not allow the dryer to heat. To access the heater and fuse, you'll need to remove power to the dryer, slide the dryer away from the wall and remove the rear cover panel. The air duct on the right(looking at the back of the machine) has the thermostat and thermal fuse mounted at the bottom and the heater assembly is afixxed to the duct by 2 1/4" hex head screws that will need to be removed in order to inspect the element for damage.

Tony for Model Number Whirlpool Dryer GEW9200LW0

The vent is unclogged and I have measured the air from the exhaust after running the dryer for 5 minutes. The air temp from the dryer is 140 degrees. Question 1: Is the heat element producing enough energy? Question 2: I read using a flexible exhaust tube from the back of the dryer to the wall is not recommended, is this correct? Question 3: Why is the laundry taking so long to dry clothes, are any of the above questions possibly a cause and effect? Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Tony. Yes the temp is good. You need to check and make sure the blower wheel is clear on the unit. If not, it will cause the issue you are having with the unit.

Diy T. for Model Number GEW9200LW0

It looks like the heating element needs to be replaced, like we did 3 years ago, so we'll order one. However, this time the red+white connector wire that runs from the heater element to the high limit thermostat looks a bit frazzled near one of the ends (plastic looks melted), even though it tests okay with the ohmmeter. Is this just a standard wire connector? I can't find it listed separately in the parts list, so is it considered part of the wiring harness?? Where can we find a replacement for just this single piece of wire with connectors on both ends?

1 Answer

Hello, You can try the 279457. You will have to use the wire nut to connect it to the other end but this might solve your issue without having to buy the complete wiring harness.

Hello Ken. The housing goes back into the unit the same way you removed it. The housing goes inside the hole in the back and then you secure it in place with the screws to the brackets and frame. These are a very tight fit and can be difficult to do.

Hi. A couple of things to check. Use a volt/ohm meter part # MA-DM1 to assist you in your diagnostics. Measure the resistance of the heating element. Make sure the element is not shorted to the case one element terminal at a time. Remove the element and look at it between the windings to see if it has expanded and shorted. This will make it stay on during cool down. It is part # WP3387747. The 2nd device is the thermistor part # WP3387134. It should be open at cold temperatures. If the inner contacts have welded itself closed then it will not open. Providing constant voltage to the element. It is best to also change the safety thermostat part # 279816 because it is being weakened as well. Thank You.

Hello Anthony. You can use a flat blade and release the panel springs to remove the toe panel off the unit. Once removed you can access and replace the element WP3387747. Make sure the power is dis-connected before replacing the element.
