The Idler Pulley is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dryers. This essential component plays a crucial role in the drum drive system, helping to guide and maintain proper tension on the dryer belt.

Causes of a faulty idler pulley in a dryer can include normal wear and tear over time, improper belt tensioning leading to bearing failure, or physical damage from impact or debris buildup.

Symptoms of needing to replace the idler pulley include:

  • Squeaking or grinding noises from the driveability area
  • The dryer drum not spinning or rotating properly
  • Excessive vibration or shaking during the dryer cycle

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore dryer models.

For Whirlpool Idler Pulley (Part Number: OEM9282600)

Jeremy for Model Number WGD9300VU0

My gas dryer started making a terrible squealing sound last night. When I manually rotate the drum, it sounds like the pulley bearing may be the source. I noticed in your other responses that baby powder is recommended to lubricate. Do you think I will have success with the lubrication path, or should I just make the replacement? In either case, when I took off the front panel, the pulley arm was visible, but the bearing looked like a challenge to service from the front. Can you also help me with the best way to access the pulley? Thank you.

Hello Jeremy. You do access and repace from the front of the unit. It is best to remove the drum when replacing and it is best to replace the pulley in the unit.

Hello Jay, The only part you need is the idler pulley and the washers 279640. By the way, do not lubricate this part unless you use a dry lubricant. The manufacturer recommends baby powder or corn starch. Graphite is not recommended since if it were to get into the load, it will stain clothes.

Chris, You may want to consider the bracket assembly W10837240 instead, and a new belt 661570V . The black powder on the pulley could be due to the normal wear and tear on the belt. or the pulley bracket and belt being out of alignment.

Hello Dave, The idler pulley should be the equivalent to one piece with its' bearing, (the center part that is metal). If the plastic spins on the metal, the pulley 279640 needs to be replaced.

Hello Clay, Spin all of the rollers and make sure they spin freely. Make sure nothing is in the blower wheel. Make sure the belt has no obvious wear such as being frayed or thin areas where a pulley may have spun in it. Look around the outside of the drum for evidence of anything contacting the drum during operation. Spin the motor to check for a bad motor bearing which you can feel in the pulley when spinning it by hand. Otherwise, just look for anything that looks to be out of the ordinary, (discoloration, wear fragments on the main base, etc.).

Hello, If they have never been turned, I would not replace them. You can turn them to expose a fresh area to the wheel bearings and get the same life out of them again that you have gotten already. If you think about how the drum sets in between the wheels, they tend to wear only in one spot. When you flip them to expose an unworn area it has the same effect as installing new shafts. Unfortunately, without your model number I cannot provide valid part numbers. As long as they haven't been flipped, I really don't believe you need them.

Peter, You'll need to disconnect power to the dryer, remove the lower front access panel (two spring clips in the seam between the lower panel and upper front panel/door assembly) set the panel aside. You may want to lay a towel or pad on the front frame of the base. Push the idler arm towards the motor pulley and slip the belt off the motor. With a small flat blade screwdriver, pry the triangular plastic retainer clip off the end of the idler shaft, and remove the washers and pulley, clean the shaft with a wrag, lubricate the shaft with high speed oil( 3 in 1 oil works) and reverse the procedure. Thanks and Good Luck
