The Washer Idler Pulley Wheel is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is designed to maintain the appropriate tension on the washer's drive belt, ensuring smooth and efficient operation during the wash and spin cycles. It helps to reduce wear on the belt and other moving parts.

You should replace the idler pulley wheel if it becomes worn, damaged, or if the bearings fail. Common causes of a bad idler pulley wheel include regular wear and tear from continuous use, exposure to excessive loads, or debris causing damage to the wheel or bearings.

Symptoms of a bad idler pulley wheel include:

  • Squeaking or grinding noises during operation
  • The washer not spinning or agitating properly
  • The drive belt slipping or coming off
  • Increased vibration or shaking during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Washer Idler Pulley Wheel (Part Number: OEM18027330)

Janet H for Model Number amana top load washer...old!

Hi. I just went thru all the changing out of the idler pulley, the idler pulley spring, and the best. Lets just say it wasnt easy...so anyways, the new belt has melted in less than two weeks. It may have started before this but today I smelled the burning rubber. I took off the panel and the belt is burned. I did notice that the new idler pulley spring did not hold the idler where it was supposed to and the spring was flimsy. The first time I ran the spin cycle, I had to push the pulley just so it would start to catch the belt. I opted to use the old pulley and it worked like it should. I would prefer to fix this washer if possible. I was wondering if anyone could help me attempt to find the problem. Thanks so much!

Hello Janet. It sounds like the tub bearings are bad in the unit and will need to be replaced.

Hello, The idler pulley disengages from the drive belt when the washer starts the spin cycle when it should stay engaged. What this means is that the spin cycle does not work. The motor pulley spins like it should in order to spin the tub , but the drive belt just sits there and gets rubbed by the motor pulley until it melts. I can physically see the idler lever switch into a different position -- a position that does not put any tension on the drive belt. The tub and the large pulley spins just fine. I already replaced the belt because it melted. Do you know what causes this? Could it have something to do with the timer? Thanks. Dave

Dave, Since the tub turns and the pulley turns (in both directions) Then the issue would be in the idler pulley WP40045001 and shaft assembly WP27001028 and spring WP40061401 . If the pulley is seizing up on the idler lever shaft, or the spring is not maintain proper pressure on the belt, you can have the symptoms you're describing.

Hello Kevin, The spin bearing is going out. This is caused by the tub seal starting to leak detergent water into the bearing which washes the lubrication from the bearing and causes it to seize. You see, the spinning of the bearing without lubrication causes heat to build in the bearing. The heat causes the metal to expand and this seizes the bearing. When the bearing seizes and the pulley is unable to turn, the motor pulley burns throgh the belt. This particular style machine requires a complete teardown to restore normal operation. The spin bearing, the outer tub seal, the belt, and the idler should be replaced. It also isn't a bad idea to replace the idler wheel and spring while you're in there to prevent a repeat failure in the near future. The drain pump normally gets replaced also just because it has to come off and it is a difficult part to replace.

Hello Dane, The pulley is designed to be installed dry since it is impregnated with a dry lubricant that is released with wear on the bushing. If you want to lubricate it, I doubt that it would hurt anything, but I would only use white lithium grease TJ20000030.
