Trae for Model Number WDT780SAEM1

Dark residue/dust/film increasingly present even after thoroughly cleaning all interior parts of the dishwasher. even lightly soiled dishes are not getting cleaned. Metal cookie sheets are not being used. Fill and drain functions work correctly. City water. The circulation pump works. No obstructions or debris detected in tubing or wash arms and no parts are visibly compromised. i've tried numerous setting combinations as well as detergents and washer citric cleaning products. problem started a few months ago. everything appears to be working as designed. at this point i'm leaning towards the pump and wash arms being ineffective and poorly designed. they work but i can't confirm they work well. i hear the wash arms spraying and rotating during the cycle however, the soap never seems to be 100%, thoroughly dissolved and the dark dust is just baffling.

Trae, oftentimes, dish soap will accumulate throughout the unit and needs to be cleaned using Affresh W10282479 during an empty normal cycle. Sometimes this will need to be repeated two or three times depending on how long it has been since the last cleaning cycle. If this has been done already, the next step would be to identify if the drain hose is allowing any backflow from the drain pipe. This can be done by removing the filter and soaking up any water in the sump (or use a wet-vac) and allow the sink to run for a couple of minutes. If water goes back into the sump, the drain hose will need to have the end going into the drain pipe looped so that part of it is elevated above where the drain hose connects in.

Hello Bryan, if the drain pump is running but no water drain, check down in the sump that the drain pump inlet is not blocked with food debris, if clear, then check the drain hose and just above the elbow is a flapper valve that maybe stuck closed or blocked, if needed the drain hose is part WPW10545278.

Charles, The 6-4 error code indicates a drain or fill problem " 6- 4-Float Switch Open 1. Overfill switch stuck in “Overfill” position and/or dishwasher not level.2. Drain hose check valve not sealing." You will need to check under and around the float in the bottom of the tub, to make sure it's not stuck in the up position, check the float switch and linkage to make sure it's aligned and operating properly. Then check the drain line and drain loop to make sure the drain is routed properly and not siphoning the water out of the tub. Check the dishwasher for proper level and installation If all checks OK, start the dishwasher, allow it to fill and start the wash cycle, unlatch the door and remove the lower rack. Measure the depth of the water in the bottom of the tub, infront of the lower spray arm, it should measure 1/2 to 3/4 in.deep, if not, there's not enough water supplied to the fill valve to proper fill and circulate the water in the wash cycle.

Tommy, you can check for obstructions by going into the filter area and you can check the resistance values of the motor. You can test from the control after disconnecting the power. The connection P5 is where you will want to test. Pins 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 1 to 3 should all read between 11.6 to 13.4 ohms. The only other possibility is that the impeller is bad or there may be clogs in the spray arms.

Melissa for Model Number KTDE104DSS0

My Kitchen Aid dishwasher is about 3 years old. The dishwasher will fill and drain, but the sprayers do not spray the water. I took the dishwasher apart, and there is nothing blocking the holes the water sprays out of. I cleaned the dishwasher with afresh, but the tablet was just in a partly dissolved puddle on the bottom of the dishwasher. I watched a video that said the circulatory motor is notorious for going bad after 3 years. I am wondering if you think that could be the problem.

1 Answer

Melissa, the circulation motor could certainly be an issue. What you would want to do to verify that the motor is bad is to verify that the motor comes on and if it does not then you will need to test if the motor windings are bad. With the power turned off at the breaker box, you will need to access the main control in the door. You will want to disconnect the wiring connection that has 3 blue wires and 3 brown wires. You will then want to test the blue wires for resistance. The first and second blue wire, the second and third blue wire, then the first and third blue wire. These should all read 11.6 to 13.4 ohms. If the readings do not show within that resistance, the windings are bad. If the motor does come on and the wash arms do not rotate, you would have an inefficient motor. If the motor does not come on and the windings tested good, you may have a control W10854215 issue. The most efficient way to replace the motor is going to be replacing the entire sump assembly WPW10605057.

Bob, there is a drain motor that is separate from the wash motor. In your situation, it fills, the wash motor is not coming on, then the drain motor comes on to pump the water out. You need to replace the wash motor assembly, part number is WPW10605057

Thomas, Remove the bottom panel [toe kick plate] and you should find a service sheet that tells you how to enter diagnostic testing for this unit. It also stores error codes that will help you determine certain problems with the machine. Your errors will show with the clean light blinking in a sequence. Record the sequence and translate it with the tech sheet and start your testing there. Any questions at that point and send us a message, we are here to help.

Thomas, You will want to check to make sure that there is 120 vac getting to the water valve. If there is but no water entering the unit then this water valve will need replaced. If there is no power then then issue will be a faulty main control board.
