Causes of a bad start switch can include repeated use over time leading to wear and tear, electrical issues such as short circuits or power surges, and physical damage due to mishandling or impact.

Symptoms of a bad start switch include:

  • The dryer not starting when the button is pressed
  • The dryer stopping unexpectedly during a cycle
  • No response or sound when pressing the start button
  • Intermittent operation or the need to press the button multiple times

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Start Switch (Part Number: OEM18025080)

Gabriela, this failure can be caused by the start switch WP3398094 or the motor 279787. With a meter probe placed at the blue wire of the switch and one probe at the pink and black wire to test for 120VAC, there should be a continuous 120VAC when the switch is released. If not, the switch has failed. If there is, then the main winding on the motor has likely failed.

Ruben, That depends on the model number, most Whirlpool "Gas" Dryers have one(1) thermal fuse, located on the burner cone beside or near the hi limit thermostat. The "Electric" Dryers have two(2)thermal fuses one is located on the blower housing, and controls the voltage to the motor, if it opens, the dryer won't start and run. Then there is a thermal cut out / fuse located on the heater element housing, which controls power to the element, if it opens, the dryer will run, but won't heat.
