The Drive Pulley is an OEM replacement part specific to Whirlpool washing machines. It is a toothed wheel component located inside the washer cabinet that functions with the belt to rotate the wash drum. The drive pulley provides the rotational force needed to agitate clothes and turbulent water during cycle operation.

Causes of a faulty drive pulley include normal wear of the plastic material from extended years of operation.

Symptoms include:

  • Abnormal noises (squealing or screeching sounds) emanating from within the washer cabinet
  • Slow or weak drum motion, even on high agitation settings
  • Premature belt wear due to slipping of the drive pulley teeth
  • Visible cracks or splitting in the pulley surface

This genuine OEM part is also compatible with select Maytag, KitchenAid, and other washer brands.

Hello Stephen, as we only sell OEM parts the manufacturer only supplies the spin bearings as part of the rear outer tub assembly W10772615, there is no mention of the bearings being available separately.

Hello Jose, the bearings and seal are only available as part of the rear outer tub assembly, however, the tub is no longer available from the manufacturer.

Todd, the metal in the bearings would only be due to a failure in them and it would be recommended that this is repaired as this could cause leaks or the spin basket to seize up. The bearings are only available as part of the rear tub assembly W10772618.

Serena, You will want to get the tech sheet from inside the unit and put the unit into a service diagnostic mode. Once in the diagnostic mode you will want to check to see if there are any error codes. The error code will tell what is going on with the unit. Based on the description it sounds like the issue will be a shift actuator that is faulty.

Rich for Model Number GHW9460PW0

I have the worn drive pulley problem others have noted here, with loud clunking in spin and the drive belt cutting into the drum creating a mess of black residue. I can snug the nut down tight enough to lock the pulley to the drum shaft to get by until I can replace it and maybe the belt. I'm concerned that the drive pulley seems to be about an inch further back than the motor pulley, so the belt tends to come off towards the tub side and rub against the tub. I don't see how this can be given that the motor and the drum are both attached to the tub assembly, with no sign of any way to adjust front/back alignment. Looks like maybe the drum shaft is pointing somewhat downward towards the front of the machine causing the pulley to tilt towards the top of the tub, almost making contact? Not sure what's going on here...

Rich, If the bolt is loosening up then causing the rubbing of the belt, try to put some Loctite on it and see if this does not correct the issue.

Hello Scott, This is most likely due to failed outer tub bearings. You will need to order the outer tub assembly W10772617 on this model to get the bearings and seals. They will be preinstalled into the tub assembly at the factory so you will not need to order special tools for this task. You should inspect the spinner support assembly shaft WPW10250573 for abnormal wear that can cause premature bearing failure of the new parts.

Hello Melanie, You need to pull the tech sheet and run a few tests. I would first try the diagnostics to pull any stored fault codes. If no codes, run the motor continuity test and test for voltage to the motor. In case you cannot find the tech sheet behind the bottom front panel, we can send you a copy if you provide an e-mail address for us to send it to.

Dale, Just a small bit of play in the pulley will not have an effect on the operation of the unit. If it is front to back play then you will need to make sure that the bolt is fully seated.

Rob, It is possible that the part came in wrong. The part was substituted from the original part and is possible that it was mis-packed.
