The Ice Auger Motor Shaft is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool and KitchenAid refrigerators and freezers. Located inside the icemaker assembly, this shaft transmits rotary motion from the motor to turn the auger paddle.

Symptoms of a failed ice auger motor shaft include:

  • Icemaker not dispensing or ejecting cubes properly
  • Auger no longer rotating or spinning slowly
  • Clicking noises coming from icemaker housing
  • Accumulation of unfrozen water inside icemaker basket

Causes relate to repeated flexing against plastic bushings and metal auger thread compounds degradation in frigid subfreezing conditions over long periods.

This genuine part is also compatible with Maytag and Jenn-Air models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Auger Motor Shaft (Part Number: OEM18018240)

1 Answer

Billy, With the motor still installed, try to get a pair of channel locks or vice grips on the head of the shaft and try to rotate it both ways to break it free. You could also try to tap it with a hammer to see if it will loosen up.

Hello Dave, you would need to check the auger motor mounting to see if it has cracked and the motor has shifted.

Hi, in my case the motor is turning and the motor drive shaft is turning, but it doesn't turn the ice bucket shaft - looks like the connection between the two has gotten rusted (although from looks it seems ok) . I feel I should get these 3 parts : i) auger motor drive shaft (listed here) ii) drive shaft seal (https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-shaft-assy-motor-wp2188917-ap6006077.html ) - mine looks ok enough but just to be safe iii) ice bucket coupling (https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-coupling-socket-wp2188918-ap6006078.html) - to make sure gears on both side are new. What's confusing is that your site also has parts like https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-coupling-bottom-crusher-wp2220458-ap6006687.html for this model, although mine looks different - I'm wondering if I'm missing a piece or something ? I posted a video of my issue to show more info - https://youtu.be/Z6zapzlLlbg Thanks again !

M, Before replacing any parts, you will want to remove the shaft from the door and see if the coupler is just frozen to the shaft and causing it to not make contact. You can run under hot water then let completely dry to correct the issue.

Bucky for Model Number KSCK25FVMS03

The motor makes noise but no ice is crushed or dispensed. The coupling connecting the auger shaft and the ice bucket seemed wobbly or loose-fitting. The teeth or grooves seem fine. I tried to get the coupling off but the Philips head screw does not loosen even with some penetrating oil applied. Maybe a rust issue. Then I tried to take the auger shaft out. I removed the two screws and the plastic housing but cannot lift the shaft out. Maybe a rust issue too. I put a vice grip on the shaft and tried tapping up to help lift it out, but that didn't break anything loose, it simply raised the shaft to a height where the ice bucket would no longer seat. So, I tapped the shaft back down and returned to motor noise and no ice dispensed. What do you suggest?

1 Answer

Bucky, Under where the ice bin is above the top shelf there is a cover that you would remove. This will give access to the motor. Before trying to remove the motor, try tapping down on the shaft with a hammer to see if you can break the shaft free from the motor. If not then drop the motor down and try to work on it at the motor to break it free. The motor and possibly the shaft will need to be replaced.

Teresa, It sounds like you may have an issue of a sticking switch and will want to remove the dispenser cover to check the switch. To get the cover off you would need to use a flat blade screwdriver at the bottom of the cover and pop the cover off. This will give access to the switch.

I removed the ice bin from the door (with difficulty) and it pulled the auger shaft up out of its housing about 2 inches. I removed the auger shaft completely to check it, but then tried getting it to sit back down in the correct position, but it won't go back in all the way, and it sounds like there are some crushed ice particles down in the shaft housing keeping the auger shaft from going back into the correct position. Can this be solved simply by defrosting the freezer? Or does it sound like some other more serious problem?

Pete, Whirlpool says to replace the drive shaft with a new part because of a redesign with the shaft. And apply some food grade silicon to the shaft and underneath the ice bucket.

Reluctant, Yes, the WP2188917 / 2188916 Auger Motor Drive Shaft will have the drive shaft sleeve, but it will not have the drive shaft seal WP2198628 that is a separate component and may or may not need to be replaced. Thanks,

Akn, You will want to check the ice container shaft under the ice bin. Check to make sure that the coupler is not frozen too low on the shaft and if so then pull it out and clean all the moisture off and reinstall and check to see if that corrects the issue. If it does not then this would likely be an issue of the ice motor being bad.

Hello Adam. Some of these can be hard to remove. Make sure the top part is disassembled and pull the rod using pliers from the top of the unit. Thank you.

Ice maker auger will dispense cubes, when the auger reverses for crushed ice it stops, you can hear the motor running. When I took it apart I noticed the cover plate where the drive shaft comes through the refrigerator # wp2188919 was broken. The driveshaft end that fits into the motor is slightly rounded but still seems like there are enough ridges to secure it. When you try for crushed ice, motor runs and you hear a thump thump thump noise. Almost sounds like the drive is popping out of the motor or the ice bucket assembly. thanks

Bill, If the auger motor shaft is rounded off then it would an issue with the shaft and will need to replace it.
