The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

Carrie, The first thing to check would be the thermal fuse. Check for continuity on the thermal fuse and if there is no continuity then replace the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse has continuity then you will want to test at the control to make sure that it is sending power to the motor. If not then replace control and if it is then you will need to check the door switch.

Laurie for Model Number WED6 400Swd Whirlpool cabrio dryer

My dryer does not heat. We have replaced the element the high temperature thermostat and the thermo fuse. It still will not heat up. Should we try replacing the thermistor? Also I noticed that the cancel button on the panel does not work now so not sure if that would cause any grief to the problem. We are very perplexed as to why it won't heat. We also checked for lint blockage and all is clear. Oh and we also replaced the moisture sensor too. Please help

DIAGNOSTIC: Displaying Inlet Air Flow Used to display the air flow value at the inlet of the heater box being measured by the machine control. After all saved fault codes have been displayed, press the Wrinkle Shield button to activate air flow detection. A 30 or 50 second countdown timer will start and the dryer will turn on. ? If the dryer is cold, the countdown will start at 50 seconds. NOTE: If the dryer is extremely cold (less than 40°F [4.4°C]) the air flow may not be detected properly, and “--” will be displayed. ? If the dryer is hot, the countdown timer will start at 30 seconds (cool down period) followed by an additional 50 second countdown. A Dryness modifier LED will also be illuminated to indicate the air flow range corresponding to the number displayed. ¦ The More LED will be illuminated for air flow readings above 40 cfm. ¦ The Normal LED will be illuminated for air flow readings between 29 and 40 cfm. ¦ The Less LED will be illuminated for air flow readings less than 29 cfm. ? If air flow value is low, check to make sure the lint screen is clean, the door seal is in place and the vent is not obstructed.

Hello Jeff. The pulley WP8544739 for the blower wheel may be off. Unplug dryer or disconnect the power. Remove front panel and lint chute. Remove the blower pulley completely from the bearing shaft (if not already disengaged). Apply a coating of medium strength thread lock WP4210460 to the entire length of threads on the blower shaft. Use a crescent wrench or 1 1/8” open end wrench on the pulley nut and a ½ square drive ratchet to hold the blower wheel and tighten. Note: If a torque wrench is available, the torque specification is 120 in. lbs. or 10 ft. lbs. Install belt and check. Note: The belt should not touch the tab on the blower housing. Install all panels and screws. Plug in dryer or connect power. Operate the dryer and check operation.

Dean, Are you sure you have 220 VAC at the outlet, and at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. Check and make sure all the terminals and connections on the terminal block are good and tight. If you're sure you have everything installed and wired correctly, you'll need to by pass the door switch and check for 120 VAC across the blue and white wires at the motor switch when the start button is activated. You may have a faulty contact in the timer, or loose connection causing low voltage to the motor.
