The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

Angel for Model Number GEX9868JQ1

Electric dryer turns on but doesnt not heat. First thing I did was clean out the lint and the duct. Its all cleaned, not much there because I cleaned it out about 4 months ago too. Check the thermostat- its good! checked the Thermal cut off- its good. Check the Heat Element- it has a crack on the sheet metal plate but it still has continuity. I did buy a new one just in case, installed it- no difference. Thermal fuse is good. The Thermistor/thermister read at 12 k ohms at "room themp" I actually check the temp of the thermistor's terminals and they are around 62degree. I check continuity at the electric control panel- all good. I checked the wall outlet- got a reading of 240, tested the plug at the dryer, also tested 240+-. Im lost, what now?

Angel, You will want to test the heater to make sure that it is getting 240 vac. If you check across the terminals it should read 240 when the unit is on and calling for heat. If it does not then check for 120 vac on each side to chassis ground. Whichever side that there is not 120 vac on is the side you will need to trace back to origination. It could be a bad centrifugal switch on the motor or could be a bad control board if all other components test ok. You will also want to double check all wiring for breaks or damage.

James for Model Number Whirlpool GEW9250PW1

Whirlpool Duet Dryer will not heat. The dryer runs, but only cold air blows. The dryer is NOT set on air fluff; it is set on high heat on a normal cycle. I cleaned the dryer completely of lint from top to bottom inside and out. I replaced: the Thermal cutoff (both came as a set): Part Number: 279973 Dryer thermal fuse: Part Number: 3392519 Dryer still blows cold air I cannot see any visible burns or breaks in the Dryer heating element, but have not physically pulled it out yet. Could this be the issue? Reading the posts from other members, it does not seem like it is a thermister issue, because my ohmeter reads 12.08 at room temperature. Any ideas? James

Hello GM Bill, The thermistor reading at 80 degrees should be 9.2K ohms. At 70 degrees 11.9Kohms and at 90 degrees 7.4k ohms

Hwllo Roy. Check at the terminal block for 240 volts. SOunds like the wire is burnt or the breaker is bad on the unit. If all is good, replace the main control board in the unit.

Kevin, Your thermistor is in range (10,000 ohms at 75-78 dgrs.) and a thermistor normally would not cause a thermal fuse to open. A couple of other checks to make, check the blower wheel, blower housing, and lint duct for clogs as well, check the element assembly for a possible "droop" or short to the support plate, causing the element to remain partially energized. Check the exhaust vent hood(outside) make sure it's not restricted or "smashed" restricting the air flow.

Hello Jeff. Based on the code you provided, f-25, the Inlet Thermistor is Shorted. You need to replace the thermistor.

Hello Dave, You may want to clean the sensor bars on unit. Excessive build up from fabric sheets will cause drying issues. Clean using alcohol.

Hello Eric. This is a venting issue. You need to check the inside of the dryer where the lint screen goes and check the blower wheel to see if it is bad.
