The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Dennis. If the dryer is heating, It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Jeff, Yes the thermistor WP8577274 operates in place of the cycling thermostat. It should have a resistance of 10,000 ohms resistance at room temperature. The thermistor is a "NTC" (negative thermal coefficient), the warmer the environment the resistance drops (100 dgrs. F. = 5.0 to 7.0 k ohms resistance). Your most likely issue is the drum moisture sensor bars WP3387223 or the wiring to the control board. If the bars don't sense the moisture in the clothes, or the wiring has a short to ground, the control senses the clothes are dry and shuts off, prematurely. Check the wiring and clean the sensor bars, with rubbing alcohol, then test the sensor circuit at the P2 connector on the control board, it should be an open circuit from each wire to chassis ground, and open circuit across both wires, then when you place something wet or metal across the two bars, there should be a resistance reading across the two wires.
