The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Johnny. Remove the upper light assembly. Once it drops down, you will see the thermistor. Cut the wires for it and remove it from the clip. Splice the new thermistor 12002355 into the location of the old.

Diane for Model Number ABB2224DEW

The freezer gets too cold and the top is warm. The coils behind are full of ice.We have had this reaccuring problem. I have read many of your forum Q&A and still don't have the answers we need. This has been going on for the last two years. My husband checked the defrost heater with his meter and that was good. We bought the thermostat kit in March. We replaced that. The frezzer has frozen up twice sine then. I remember reading there could be threee things to check, but i don't remember what the third one is. Do I need to replace the heater, evaporator cord? Does the board need to be replaced? Do I need to replace the thermistor?

Diane, With the heater checking ok and the thermostat being replaced the control board would be the other part that would fail. The control board would need to be replaced.

Kevin, " Freezer Thermistor (some models) 1. Remove Thermistor cover WP67003924 located on the Evaporator Cover by inserting a screw driver in slot and releasing tab holding Thermistor cover on. 2. Unclip Thermistor from cover and cut wires to Thermistor. 3. Remove Thermistor." When you splice the new wires into the harness, make sure the connections are good and tight, when you crimp the wire nuts, make sure that is also a good tight crimp, and as a precaution you may want to apply a dab od sealant in the "bell' of the connector so moisture or water cannot seep into the wire connection.

Duncan, The thermistor is located in the light compartment at the top of the refrigerator section. You will want to pull the light cover off and on either side of the light there are openings for clips to pull the light assembly down. Once down the thermistor is on the right side of the assembly. You may also want to check the operation of the damper to make sure that it is opening and closing. The damper is located when you pull the ice bin out there is a cover on the left bottom side that you would put a small flat blade into the little hole and rotate up to release the cover. Once cover is off you can pull the icemaker, auger and damper assembly all out as an assembly. You would check the operation of the damper by turning unit on and off by temp up and down.

Hello Tiger Clarkbar. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello John, You may want to pull the rear cover off the freezer compartment and check your frost pattern. Your frost pattern should be full frost pattern should cover the entire evaporator coil. If the coils are impacted or the coils do not have a full frost pattern then this will keep the unit from cooling properly. Also make sure your vents have not become blocked. Make sure that your condenser is not plugged with dust.

Mike, The "flopping" noise and getting too cold in the refrigerator compartment, would indicate an issue with the "damper" assembly WP67003903 not the thermistor. You also want to check and make sure, the doors are closing and sealing properly. there are no articles against the walls or hanging over the shelves. Make sure the freezer operating temperature is not below 0 dgrs. F. (3 to 5 dgrs.is the recomended setting).

Hello Victor. Make sure the fan motor is running properly in the freezer. If so, and the temps are not correct in the fresh food, you will need to replace the control WPW10503278 in the unit. It sounds like it is not reading the thermistor correctly. Make sure there is no defrost issue in the unit as well. Look for frost on the back wall of the freezer.
