The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Char. You may have a defrost issue. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the evaporator coils in the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the control board. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Manikanta, This sounds like a defrost issue. I'm sorry but this is as far as we can go without the model number from the units' I.D. tag so we can look up the configuration and the specific parts in the unit you have in your home. I apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Hello Steve. It changes in resistance based on the temperature so the board knows the temp inside the unit.

Eric, The thermistor for the freezer is located under a cover on the back wall of the freezer. This most likely is not the cause for the freezer not operating. You will want to pull the rear wall of the freezer and check the frost pattern of the evaporator coils. If the frost pattern goes down just a couple of loops on the evaporator then there is a sealed system error with either a restriction in the evaporator or a loss of refrigerant. If the coils have a full even frost pattern from top to bottom then the sealed system is ok. At that point you will want to check for the condenser fan motor to not be working and for the condenser coils to be clogged up with dust.

Shawn, If you left the freezer drawer open all night, it's going to take a lot more than an hour for all the ice and frost on the evaporator coils to melt and clear, so the air can circulate. It'll take more like a day or two. You also want to put down some towels or a lot of rags to collect the defrost water from under and around the refrigerator.

Hello Jim. Check for a bad door seal on the unit letting warm air into the unit. This will cause the frost. As for the icemaker and freezing food, check the damper and icemaker in the fresh food section. If broken, you will need to replace both the icemaker W10583817 and the damper WPW10127427 in the unit.
